Someone my daughter knows has been suspended from school for two weeks and the crime is truancy.:confused

Is it just me that finds this punishment bizarre, the school are effectively giving this pupil exactly what she wants only now with permission.

A friend of mines son is refusing to go to school and for the past month has stayed at home.Usually social work get involved and do something but in this case because they cant do anything ie the child has special needs and there's no where else to send him, he's at home.
the mother knows social work wont chase her as they've more important issues that require their time, like child protection.
I know this for a fact as that is what I was told two years ago.:(

It's difficult to know what else they can do ... short of giving the girl a good thrashing across the palms of her hands (never did me much harm)

Mind you I only truanted the once.

Let the stupid child duck school - by the time she is leeching off the welfare state we may have more hard line policies about stopping benefits for dis-engaged ex-schoolgirls who cannot see further than beyond the end of their noses.
By the sound of your Son's friend the only 'special need' of his is a kick up the backside with a size ten boot.

Percy if only a kick in the backside could solve the problem but I'm afraid the problems autistic and as this government is all for inclusion to mainstream school then that's where he's to be educated.:~(
That is unless my friends finds some money from somewhere and privately educates him.
as for the girl I'd have her "escorted" to school and "sat " on the entire day.

this org is to talk, for some it may well be a way of release.
Maybe in the last thread it was never really heard.
Ops came back to add, skipping school sucks.
My girl about a year ago took the afternoon of with her friends, the school system called me and i made straight in and took her of the school bus.
Worked, skip school and i will give them a red face, works well.
No beating was involved, lol

.. the boy is autistic....I 'm probably expected to apologise. Sorry...but I cannot bring myself to. Yes, of course he needs a 'special school' the good taxpayers of Skye should be happy to fund one...we need many more of them on the mainland too. At the end of the day, until this happens such children are the responsibility of their parents...home education seems the only option if they cannot get the lad beyond his front door.

Home education only becomes an option if the parent is qualified in "special education " needs to comply.
Until a parent "cracks up" under the strain nothing will get done.:~(

The school by law have a duty of care for their pupils and every child is under European Convention on the rights of the child to be happy at school.

quote]

I really am sorry now c/pop. The sentiments contained above are absolute fantasy cloud-cuckoo lar-lar land I'm afraid.

No kid has a right to 'be happy' at school For some it's a miserable experience. For most a burden to be tolerated....character building...for a few lucky ones who love school then it's fantastic.

Children have every right to feel safe, secure and cared for but happy??!!
No...I'm afraid not....if any European politico has come up with that sentence then it just reinforces my view that they live in an unreal world.

seriously Percy they have but then again we know its cloud cukoo land but if councils want to promote this policy then they should implement it.:confused

i have my reasons i need people to sit up and listen, what do you suggest i let her go to school only to be intimitated by her teacher, sorry but by doing this she knows that she doesnt have to take this from people no matter who they are.

'intimidated' ?
She said a piece of work 'was a mess' that's all.
I must seem dreadfully hard hearted to you. The truth is that although your child is special to you in school she is just a pupil...in the wider world just another face in the crowd.

I feel I can no longer contribute anything worthwhile to your problem as we are totally at odds. Good luck with it.

a mother using her motherly instincts cannot be that bad.
I would take the child to school, and talk in person to the teacher with another member of staff in on the conversation.
I would explain the concerns, and give a breif history to what her past held.
As for just another face in the crowd, Maybe some are.
Let us try and make our children the faces that stand out in the crowd.;)

What is happening to our educational system.

What is happening to the parenting? Maybe parents should have a look at themselves first before they start blaming the education systen.

Cattach I agree some parents are to blame but I know of parents who have bent over back wards trying to get their kids to "conform" to know avail.
When the system breaks down and it invariably does the child becomes looked after, usually outwith our authority.
Hc have increased this budget provision by 2.5 million for the projected year.[disgust]

What is happening to our educational system.
Our system has gone bananas, i have almost the same problem as your friend with my autistic son, and yet i know of a child here who was playing truent now being treated with days out, being taken to the bowling alley and various other treats!!I am in the process of starting to educate my son at home, the education system has some strange ways which are often unfair.

It does seem bizarre, Cuddlepop. We have one at the moment who is suspended for 3 days, but does have to some in at 3.30 and do a couple of hours after school to get their work done.

Now that idea I like.

This one in our case has a new social worker attached to her who is demanding the school still has to educate her.
There's also another programe available called ASDAN which is suppose to prevent exlusion by proving alternative more hands on Education.
This is for the kids that are in fear of being excluded and not for the kids with additional needs that are excluded through the schools inability to educate to the best of that pupils.
Its almost sending out a message to misbehave.:confused
