Although when I check my max broadband speed on my BT account it says 8kbps, it is actually "up to" 8kbps.

Normal usage for me (Wick), is about 1.7 - 2.0kbps.

I seem to remember the Gadget Show running a campaign for ISPs
to advertise more accurately what the normal or average line speed was.

I think my "up to" speed changed in 2006 but I have yet to experience this. BT recently announced that they are going to upgrade the network to 24kbps.

I assume this will be an "up to" figure, and that my connection will tick along at pretty much the same rate.

I tried the BT broadband speed test, it said i was 378 metres from the exchange, and that 2mb would be my best speed.

Just tested my line and got the following and im up the top of the bignold park

IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5957 kbps

Think that reads Smoking Fast ;)

The speed tests will be different each time you use them due to factors ie Traffic on the speed test sites, whether there is other programs running on yer pc/laptop. How many is using the net on the same phone line before it hits the exchange and distance from the exchange also. Plus if there is other computers online within yer house too.

Location Wick

ISP - BT 8mb

Hardware used - Laptop on wireless 54mbps connection

As you can see, all different results although upload was pretty much the same. But in the reality of surfing, online gaming or downloading etc I have no problems with line speed at all.

Hi, are you actually on a Broaband connection and did you do the test using this site http://speedtester.bt.com/ or are you on a dial-up 56k connection and used the 'Broadband Speedtest' on the Bt Broadband website that tells you what speed you should expect to get?

I ask as that 'Broadband Speedtest - How Fast Can I Get' on the Bt Website is a load of old rubbish and totally inacurate, when i moved house i used that checker and was told i could only get 0.5mg maximum connection even though i am only about 800m from the exchange, but when my Broadband was activated i was and still am connecting at around 6meg

IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7424 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5686 kbps

These are the results from a test i just did on the line that BT and all other ISP's told me i could only get a 0.5meg max connection with, those tests are as unreliable as the Tills in Tesco's :)
