View Full Version : And Nobody Batted An Eyelid! (Wind turbines)

On 23rd February 2008 at 11.01 I listed the one hundred and forty-seven (147, pure co-incidence!) industrial size wind turbines currently somewhere in the Planning System which will be clearly visible from Watten, or from around Watten, when they are constructed.

AND NOBODY BATTED AN EYELID!

perhaps you should have posted it in a thread that might have been read by someone. That one was of no interest to me after about 2 posts.

That should be the last of them then,

isn't 147 a maximum !!!

Is it necessary to have a multitude of threads about wind-farms?

If we get 147 we'll all be snookered. ;)

So they would occupy about 3% of the land area of Caithness by my reckoning?

Is it necessary to have a multitude of threads about wind-farms?

Since moving here a couple of years ago I have noticed that people are obsessed with wind farms they either love or loathe them.[evil] They are a necessary evil and whether people like it or not they are here to stay. I have heard all the nonsense about the noise they make, the fact that they produce less power, that people who want them are (pardon the pun) power and money crazed. Put it like this if someone turned your power off, would you want windfarms then???

Please no more threads after this about wind farms.....

A few reasons why no one batted an eyelid ,,in no particular order Pultneytown and rural Post office closures ...lack of retail outlets in Thurso
the rundown of Dounreay ..the danger to shipping and wildlife because of that lost purse net ..tax evasion by large companies ..10% band going on income tax ....petrol prices...speeding in caithness ..alcohol abuse in Caithness...etc etc etc etc
That should give some clues

I'm waiting for the tide-power turbines in the Pentland Firth to start chopping up all the cuddly whales, dolphins, scuba-divers (on seconds thoughts forget them) and other forms of sea life. That will take the heat off windmills. I am thinking of starting a NIMWF (not in my water feature) pressure group.

Seems to me most posts so far should have been directed to "Organising the org". Nobody makes you look or take part but yourselves.

Beeg Hughie at least added something worthwhile.

And mccaugm, how and why are they a "necessary evil"? And why are they coming here to central Caithness to provide power for central England, and before anyone jumps on that band wagon, it is NOT a racist comment, it is fact.

Agreed, so visual amenity issues are of minimal concern whilst power output is maximised. Perfect solution.

Whilst, as a newcomer to the area, I can see the wider benefit of wind farms. What benefit is there going to be for the local community. I.E. will they attract more tourists, provide long term employment?

In that case they would serve better if they were built on the South Downs, closer to where the power is required, I would have thought.

No chance of the wind running out, if it ever did, the hot air spouted here nightly would outdo any wind.

But i don't see it attracting tourists or lots of permanent long term jobs

I did some calcs a while back that showed that the power generated in caithness is all lost in the grid by the time it gets to the borders.

Can't seem to find them though. [lol]

I still think they should have clay pigeon launchers firing from the top to give that high pheasant feel to the place!

All those exploding turbines,

It's the non windies taking potshots at them.

That is interesting.

How do your calculations stand up when comparing the transmission energy losses of the Dounreay reactors with those of renewable energy systems?

I am not bothered if the power generated here is for us or not and I don't suppose many others are either. If Caithness is famed for the wind produced then why not put it to good use.

It does bother me, the local economy is important to everyone. I'm trying to understand what the benefit is. Being famed for wind produced energy doesn't in itself seem to be a reasoned argument.

Funny you should mention that. Since it is no secret that the tidal energy schemes and the wind turbines will produce an excess of electricity at peak times and that there are substantial difficulties in taking that to the south, there has been discussions that new business will come to the area to take advantage of such sources of renewable energy thus placating the said problems.

I can only agree, McCaugm. What would be their alternative choice? Coal-fired or nuclear? Ah, I've got it! They would rather go back to tallow candles and peat fires - excellent!! :confused

It is not a question of either or, it is a questioon of balance. Does one hundred and forty seven turbines surrounding Watten sound balanced to you? That is what is inthe system.

I know - I was only teasing. :D

What does interest me is why the UK always opts for these big long bladed turbines and on-one is choosing or trialling the cylindrical style. Strikes me that they would be more efficient, take up less space and be quieter. You can find them on some web sites.

At last, people being pragmatic.

Nothing is perfect. We just got to take our heads out of the sand and face the options and more importantly opportunities.
