Avoid Urbis...poor exhibits in a futuristic buillding...although it's free.
Science and Technology Museum v.good and free. Old Trafford museum if you're into football...City's new stadium and the 'B' of the Bang. (close together)..Salford Quays to witness urban regeneration...Airport if you like watching airliners come and go....I've never been to the Trafford Centre but I'm tols there are lots of shops there. 'G' Mex exhibition centre converted from the old Central Railway Station worth a look...if you're not a homosexual I'd avoid the 'Village' I'm not sure they like being gawped at anymore but unsure as I've nt been since it was taken over....have a look at the Metrolink trams - still a novelty in Britain....Shambles - the old pub and Rylands library on Deansgate are both architecturally significant.

Have fun and bring a brolly.

What sort of age group are you?

What sort of music are you into?

Where are you going to be staying and how will you be getting about?

Once I know all these, my tourist advice will follow.

I was a weekend visitor to Manc throughout the late eighties and lived there for four odd years in the nineties, all partying and doing stuff so I know every place that used to be and I have visited every single park/attraction/club, etc. at least a few times and most of the new ones too as I still visit frequently.

The gay village is awsome crack, great place for a night out if you want a laugh and friendly people.

Go on 'The Manchester Wheel' I checked last week and they wrote back: "HI, YES THE WHEEL WILL STILL BE HERE AFTER MAY, IT WILL BE HERE UP TO CHRISTMAS 2008." Regards Management Team

Trafford Centre. Definately. Don't worry about the shops, you could be in the Eastgate centre for all that's worth, but the Great Hall etc is very impressive.

The advice to avoid Urbis is correct! I booked this place http://www.manchester-selfcatering.co.uk/manchester.htm
It was great! The City art gallery is lovely and has a super cafe

They do let non gays in (and out!) of the village! It is actually a good area to have a beer n' grub in, maybe best to try it during the day or early evening though if your not feeling too secure!

Avoid the Trafford Centre at weekends especially if there is a match at Old Trafford, not unheard of to spend two or more just to get out of the car park.

The wheel is good if it's still there.

Watch out for some of the pubs, all too much front and overpriced beerage for those that want to show off, i.e. Deansgate Locks and the Castlefield area.

If you like your curries then try the Curry Mile in Rusholme, awsome!
But be sure to have travel arranged or be sure to be with a few others, not the area for hanging around if you don't know it.

'Tis a good city but keep your wits about you.

Take the A635 East or the A62 East.

The first will take you to Holmfirth the other will take you to Marsden. Both are in Yorkshire.

Better beer, better scenery and not in Lancashire.

The sun will shine upon you, birds will twitter and sing around you all day (tends to get annoying after a bit), people will greet you like an old friend and you will live longer than you would walking around Mosside or Cheetham Hill......

Not that I'm biased, you understand.

Them Pennines are there for a reason son!:Razz

Spent a good few hours wandering around Moss Side, especially on match day in a drunken stupour, Cheetham Hill, now there's a fun place to spend an evenin'. Although the last boozer I went in there got burnt down soon after.

I am supprised nobody has mentioned the set of Coronation Street.

Be carefull of that Jack Duckworth grandson as he is a wrong un.

He nicked Jacks betting slip and cashed in on over three grand.

The Rovers is always a good bet for A decent pint and Bettys hot pots are to die for ,However as with the village you may need to keep an eye on Shaun.

Good luck and enjoy your trip

I am in my late 20s and my other half is in 30s. We are going to see the Foo Fighters play at City's stadium, so into rock/indie music. We have booked a hotel in the city centre, we are flying down but havn't thought about how to get about the city yet.

Depends how long you got, but if you are like me you won’t be too ershed about shopping till ye drop on the day of your gig or the day after!

How about a bit of light shopping in Affleck’s Palace?

http://www.afflecks-palace.co.uk/ (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://www.afflecks-palace.co.uk/)
Wow, all these places seem to have websites now!

For eats there is great food at the Dry Bar, right near Afflecks, which is one of THE coolest places to hang out, and for chilling out the day after the night before try Dukes at Castlefield, they also do great food, (used to bump into footballers and Corrie stars there, but is that a good thing...?) , and of course at Castlefields there is also the Museum of Science and Industry.
http://www.dukes92.com/ (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://www.dukes92.com/)

For general pubbing it with the rock crowd there is the Salutation, Higher Chatham St. and the Salisbury and Grand Central pubs, right next to Oxford Road station. All nearby each other and are all really good, and you can guarantee the latter two will be full of Foo fans before and after the gig, as well as folk getting some in before moving on to Jilly’s (Rockworld) across the road....which brings me neatly to that place!

There is only one place to go on a Friday night après gig, and that is Rockworld! THE place for all sorts of rockers, grungies and everyone else, and Friday night is the all nighter! You will love it, believe me, and it is where the best crack will be after the gig!
http://www.jillys.co.uk/rockworld/ (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://www.jillys.co.uk/rockworld/)

Of course Manc has loads of clubs and bars and attractions, but if I was just down a night or two for a big gig, I would keep it simple and concentrate on chilling out in the sun!

Don’t worry about getting round the city, everything is within easy walking distance, though gettin to the stadium is probably a bus job...

I have no idea plank. Although your slight pun raised half a crinkled smile.
As you're new here I have no idea whether you are the sensitive type....or conversely an argumentative beggar, like myself.

Meanwhile...am I sensing anpther over reactor whose default response to any form of counter opinion is to lump ideas into little boxes, misusing language as they go.

This route is as well trampled as Canal Street's cobbles* and I've no desire to go down it once more ...but if you're a crusader then please don't bother on my account.

Meanwhile, it seems much goes on in Manchester these days that I'm happily unaware of. No expert on night life (not since 1970 anyway) I'm tempted to mention the Imperial War Museum North, down in Trafford Park which was built to resemble a shard of shrapnel...free entry and well worth a visit.

(* it was cobbled in the seventies I think, maybe they've smoothed 'em over by now.)

Forget Manchester its full of Mancs.
Get on the 182 or go to Victoria Station platform 6 and go to Shaw.
It takes 25 minutes and you will either love it or you will hate it, there are no half measures.

If you do let me know and we'll have a drink.

I am out - just.....but I was born within its boundaries and consider myself a Mancunian...albeit a somewhat unusual one. Your point needs some elaboration before I can take it seriously, although the sentiment, if not the spelling is recognisable.
