Pet Fostering Service Scotland (PFSS) is a registered Scottish charity set up in 1985 with volunteer fosterers throughout mainland Scotland.

What does it do?
PFSS provides emergency care for pets, such as:

When the owner is ill.
When the owner has an accident.
When the owner has to leave home suddenly.

Priority is given to elderly owners.

It is NOT for holidays or rehoming of pets.

How does it work?
A carer in the emergency (such as a doctor, nurse, police officer, social worker, minister, home help or responsible relative) contacts the Area Organiser on behalf of the pet owner.
The Organiser gets details of the pet and allocates the pet to a suitable available fosterer.

Who are the fosterers?
They are people who have volunteered to do this work.
They understand the importance of pets in people's lives.
They have experience of caring for pets.
They live in the town, and in the country.
They are of all ages, shapes and sizes (pets don't mind!).
They like animals in their own lives.
They may have animals themselves, or they may not have any.

What do they do?
They give a temporary home to a pet.
They feed it, take care of it, and return it when the owner is able to have it back again.
They give the pet security and a home from home.
They give the owner freedom from worry about the pet.

What kind of pets are fostered?
Usually dogs, cats, caged birds or small mammals.

Fosterers are never expected to take an animal that would be unsuitable for them.

What are the costs?
Pet Food - this is paid for by the owner.
Vet Bills - payment is expected from the owner.
Accidental Damage - The fosterer's own insurance should provide for accidental damage in the house.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Become a volunteer fosterer.
Become a friend of PFSS.
Publicise the service.
Fill a collecting can.
Raise funds at a show or event.
Collect used stamps (especially foreign).

If you'd like to help PFSS desperately need fosterers in the Caithness area or if you can help in any other way please put your name and address on a short note saying how you might help and send it to:
