Could be a halo highlander, usually a sign that rain is on the way.The moisture in the air gets refracted and causes what seems to be a soft hazy ring around the moon.

Old lore saying,
"The closed the halo, the nearer the storm."

You can also get Ice Halo's when the air temperature is low. That's what it looked like to me.

saw it last night.beautiful sight. My wee boy came down this morning saying he had seen the moon and the big circle all the way around it, he was very impressed by it.....He calls it the Magical Mystical Moon...or the 3m in his words...

It's called a halo and shows a change in atmospheric conditions.

According to my collins weather book, these can also be known as a Corona for the moon and a Halo for the sun.
They are usually a sign that there may be bad weather, winds etc on the way.
Another sign that the weather is going to be bad is that my cat goes totally mental!

One night when I was wee we saw a big halo like that, and my mum said it meant bad weather on the way. My dad teased her about believing old wives' tales. He paid for that the next day when we woke to find so much snow that he had to dig his way out of the back door of the house. Unfortunately all he had was a wee coal shovel, as the big spade etc were out in the garden shed. I was able to walk onto the roof of our house, there was so much snow piled up round the front.

It will start at 1.45am tonight and will end 5.06am, too late for me to see it. :(

The eclipse is tonight (20/02/08). It will start around 01:30 but be at it's best around 03:00 am. I hope I have the will power to go look when the alarm goes off...... I'll probably switch it off and turn over. Which is a pity because the next lunar eclipe in th UK is only in 2015..... when I am toooooo old to care about it, probably.

I was only a toddler in the winter of 1955! I do remember seeing a helicopter dropping hay to some of our cows that winter.

I must have been about 8 or so when we had to dig our way out. Dad started off dumping the snow in the bath, then he had to open the bathroom window and throw it out of there! I kept well clear, as I tend to do if there's physical labour involved.

I agree with Northener, it was probably an ice halo. The colder the weather, the tighter it will be to the moon.
