i agree justine ,its the owners fault.
Its just a shame that so many breeds get a bad reputation, you dont hear af the injuries caused by a yorkie terrier, or toy poodle, but in my experiance of working with all breeds of dogs from pets to police and security dogs, and rescues, i have been bitten more times by small dogs than big (aggressive) dogs!
my son was bitten on the face when he was 18 months old,by my mother in laws dog, completely out of the blue, this has left him with a big scar about 4inches in his hair line plus one about an inch on his cheek and several small scars on the side of his head.
because it was a collie cross not a dangerous breed no one was interested, but had it been a gsd or rott it would have bee a different story!
all dogs are good its the owners who turn them bad through neglect or ignorance!!

I'm a little puzzled by the comment that it is not believed that the dogs owners are related to the child's family.
I can't see that it's really of any relevance, unless they believe it should affect how seriously the incident should be treated.

My mate has a staffy and she is the most adorable dog ever.....she is sweet kind and loving! So yeah, I agree 100%...owner's fault! Owners of vicious breeds should be checked into by the SSPCA and forced to attend dog training lessons!

I cant stand it when things like this happen..The poor child and the dog that was put down through no real fault of its own..We have recently got a staffy pup after many years of not wanting a dog like this as we have many small children..

I did some research and the staffy has been put on a list with another dog as being the perfect dogs for children..
I now agree.our Tank is the most wonderful dog and i cant see him being any bother to anyone as he gets older. He is only 13 weeks old has been socialised with children people, dogs and everything else he will come up against as he grows...

I am a reformed believer in staffies.... and cant wait to enjoy all thoses years with my little tank...
