It did make me ponder the very different situation of Lesley Ash, who has recently received £5 million, in compensation for the infection similar to MRSA that she contracted while in hospital. :confused

That really was a disgrace. The award (out of court) was based on loss of future earnings; the reality shows she's a failed actress whose only real success was "Men Behaving Badly" - everything else she's been in has been taken off the air. Her career ended when she got her "trout pout" and again when she got lots of publicity after her husband beat her up - again - which is why she was in hospital when she was infected with MSSA.

So the taxpayers have given her early retirement and she's currently looking at buying properties in South Africa and Majorca. Also of course, her business interests (http://www.killmrsa.com/) are, one imagines, earning a crust or three as well.

There's a whole discussion area here about compensation within the NHS; since it's taxpayer funded, any award for damages is ultimately shared out between the rest of us. Almost uniquely, there's no penalty to the people who allow it to happen, who allow it to be perpetuated, and who allow it to infect more patients.

The same is true of other Hospital Acquired Infections, as well as medical and clinical errors involving the wrong injection in the wrong place, incorrect amputations, healthy kidneys being removed and all the other errors that can happen - and do.

Anyone any thoughts?

That Lesley Ash received £5m is an absolute disgrace and the case should be reviewed and a more appropriate sum awarded. There should be a higher level of compensation in some extreme cases but £5m being awarded to a no-mark actress will make the blood boil of any right thinking person.
