Very interesting, how do you suppose they were formed? Was it the stalagmite way.. with water dripping from above, or repeated freezing of dew, or what? Inquiring minds want to know [lol].

Stalactites hang down, stalagmites point upwards, easy to remember if you think of stalactites as tights! ;)

From the mineral deposits set down in my mind when I was a child in the Caithness West school system, the 'g' in stalagmites reminds us of the ground to which they are attached.

Those are good ways to remember which is which. Also, the 'c' in stalactites reminds us that they form on the ceiling of a cave. :)

Highlander, your pictures are amazing; many thanks for sharing them! I remember stalagmites and stalactites by the fact that stalactites have to hang on tight....... and I agree with HG that the last photo is of your doormat. :)

My wifie was driving and she is a smooooth driver - focusing well ahead and a fast shutter means little visible shake.

I have to admit that I was inspired by a number of Raven's 'photos from a moving car shots' that made me realise that it is very possible.

Plus, I was worried that if I asked my wifie to stop again so that I could get out to take some more photos she might not wait for me to get back in before heading for home[lol].
