Hello, Im just wondering if you are all aware of Maggies Highland centre at Raigmore? Its the funny shaped building with green roof, to the right of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. They actually got awards for the design of their building and it is so lovely and bright inside.
Maggies is for anyone affected by cancer - anyone who has, or has had cancer, for their family, their friends and their carers.
Maggies is first and foremost a homely, relaxing place to be in. they are open Monday to friday 9am-5pm including bank holidays. so drop in anytime if you want to have a coffee/tea and a chat, or if you just want a quiet somewhere to sit down and read the paper, magazines or the great information booklets etc they have there.
They have a support group or you can have individual support where a clinical psychologist provides sessions where you can talk, get support and learn strategies for dealing with a diagnosis of cancer and its consequences.
They also run a programme of activities like expressive art, look good and feel better, nutrition workshop, relaxation and visualisation, Tai chi and chi kung, managing stress, etc etc.
I got great comfort going there and having a cup of coffee, the staff are so friendly and helpfull, and their booklets helped us a lot.
If you are in the oncology unit, come out of there to the main corridor and take the first door on the left to the outside and maggies is just ahead of you. You cant miss the building when you see it. by car, drive right round the back of the hospital and there are parking spaces outside maggies building, opposite the oncology unit.
Go to their webiste www.maggiescentres.org (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://www.maggiescentres.org) to find out more. you can email them at highlands@maggiescentres.org
PARKING FREE... Not many cancer patients know, that if you are an outpatient/in patient receiving treatment etc you can get a key fob from the oncology unit which enables you to have free parking in the hospital car park .every time you visit. the key lasts the duration of your visits then you hand it back. there is a £10 refundable deposit.
Benefits advice. the macmillan cancer support citizens advice burea u is a real help. their building is situated by the dining room at the back of the hospital or you can make an appointment to see them at maggies or phone them on 01463 706178. They are very helpful and friendly and give practicalhelp for anyone who has cancer or is caring for someone with cancer. you can talk over what you need with a specialist advisor and they certainly do get things sorted very quickly.
RADAR key....do you know you can get a radar key for £3...may have gone up in price.....which opens every public toilet in Britain...theres one downstairs in wetherspoons and one as you go in the toilets at british rail inverness. at night when you turn the key to open the toilet door the light goes on. Very useful if you travel a lot.
There is aLSO a Highland Laryngectomee and family support group for anyone who has been affected by laryngectomy, they meet 6 times a year and most of their meetings are at maggies on the 4th wednesday of alternate months 2-4pm
