I am new to this, i have a Canon 400D and i would like to buy a lense primarily to take photo's of the kids (hopefully good enough to mount) and general landscapes whilst walking about.
any help on this matter would be most appreciated.

Hi

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens which normally comes as part of a kit with the Canon 400D is more than adequate for your requirements, surprised you didn't get one supplied with the camera.

You can view the spec and pricing for this lens at the following web address.

You can perhaps add a longer reaching lens such as the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM later.

Worth checking out the Sigma (canon fitting) range if your budget is tighter.

Also worth looking at an outfit based in Hong Kong called "UR Galaxy". I got a 135 - 400mm sigma lense (ordered on Thursday, received on the following Tuesday!!) vastly cheeper an from anyone in the UK.

I good lens would be the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or the Sigma 17-70mm.

If your budget allows the Canon 17-40mm L is a nice lens, or the 17-55mm IS f2.8 EF-S is even better.

I use the Canon 17-40mm L as my primary and it is superb. You don't need much zoom for kids, prefer to go wide. Just get in there and take photos!

This lens will cover most general photography including landscapes and portraits, you can add a longer lens later if you find you have a need for one!

Yup that is a decent lens. I cut my digital teeth on a 18-55mm and it will produced shots that would shame more expensive lenses

Some examples with that lens:

Only let me 2 photos? Oh well.

A little editing went into the last photo, but the first one was out of the camera. A great little lens much undervalued. I only really upgraded to the 17-40L as had money to waste. As far the picture quality goes there is little to no difference. Quite depressing consideringhow much I paid for this lens

All the best, enjoy getting out and about to take photos!

Cheers,

Sam
