We love graveyards too. So long as you stand there and read the persons name then at least they are not forgotten.
This was late in the evening, low light, and spooky. This is not an excellent photo, but the slight blur gives a feeling of motion. Maybe its the statue, maybe it's the trees?

And just to keep up with the Birningum feel I'm just running through the Black Sabbath album 'Black Sabbath' - the greatest British band ever..... or they'll rip your heart out and feed it to the Evil Woman in the Wicked World. YYeeeaaahhhhhh!![evil]
I wonder if this is abstract enough for Monday night's camera club comp?

Show us more psyber! That place looks promising!
Having visited many graveyards recently there was one symbol that always seem to come back again and again. I havent got a clue what the meaning of this is.
Any suggestions anyone?

It's the first 3 letters of the name of Jesus in Greek letters. It may also mean "By this sign"
I knew something.

Are you sure of that? Why would the stones display three Greek letters?

No, it's something Greek as well. Didn't they teach you anything at school?
Even I know there may be two meanings and I've only got CSE's in plasteciene, dance and bicycle cleaning.

There are quite a few meanings of this and here are two of them
IHS :- Monogram or Symbol representing the Greek Contraction of "Jesus" sometimes regarded as an abbrevation of the Latin Phrase meaning "Jesus, Saviour of Men"
The HIS :- Are the first Three Letters (Iota, Eta, Sigma) of the Greek Spelling of Jesus. This is the more Ancient Form.
This information was passed on to me by Jalna.

Something to do with this maybe?....
The letters "INRI" are initials for the Latin title that Pontius Pilate (http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/pontiuspilate.html) had written over the head of Jesus (http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/jesus.html) Christ (http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/christ.html) on the cross (John 19:19 (http://www.christiananswers.net/bible/john19.html#19)). Latin was the official language of the Roman (http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/rome.html) Empire.
The words were "Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm." Latin uses "I" instead of the English "J", and "V" instead of "U" (i.e., Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum). The English translation is "Jesus (http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/jesus.html) of Nazareth (http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/nazareth.html), the King of the Jews."
http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/calvary-03b.jpg The Early Church adopted the first letters of each word of this inscription "INRI" as a symbol. Throughout the centuries INRI has appeared in many paintings of the crucifixion (http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/crucifixion.html).

Right, now this information made me google a little... I was puzzled by the Latin letters and I found that peeps just translated the more funny shaped Sigma into the Latin letter "S".
The Latin letters made me think that it can`t have anything to do with Greek.
I was wrong and eat my humble pie!
I rather like the translation of it though.... "In this symbol thouse shalt conquer"
Thanks to everyone who enlightened me in that matter!

I would strongly suggest so! [lol] I can see that you are more familiar with the Greek language than with the German ;)
