Was just having a chat with a fellow orger exchanging notes on our experience of dentists.

I have had no work done since I was a child (aside from a tweaked wisdom tooth)
My dentist takes roughly 2 minutes a year to examine me and tell me my teeth are ' bullet proof' and charges me £15 to stay on his 'books' basically.

OH has a mouth like a 'burnt out fuse box' and has all sorts of plans for dental work stretching out for years and £££££'s! ( root canal has been mentioned and I know that's not nice!)

We have the same diet and brushing habits...so I know it is a genetic thing.

With NHS dentists lists closing all the time..what are your experiences?

I was absolutely petrified of the dentist. when i was at school in Thurso, I had an abcess on my gum, to cut a long story short, a local dentist was at my school at the time, took me into the staff room, and stabbed the abcess with a plaque scraping thingy ma bob.. it was agony and it scared me off dentists for years..

my dentist now is fantastic, she knew how scared i was, and did the best she could to relax me, up to the point where my tooth chipped a few weeks ago, and i phoned straight away... i didnt leave it till the pain was driving me mad.

i know most people laugh at us folk who are scared of the dentist, but there was a time id rather give birth than have a filling!!!

I am one of those Caithness folk that will soon be in need of dentures as I am nowhere near the top of the list for a dentist, despite registering years ago. I have always been religious about brushing my teeth, do not like sugary drinks or sweets, though I do have the occasional sinful, chocolate binge, and yet though I have always attended to my teeth, they are in a terrible state. As a child I had scarlet fever and the medicine I received at that time, made my teeth crumble, pregnancy has not helped them, during both my teeth crumbled and bits chipped off, and smoking and tea drinking have contributed to their shade, despite regular brushing. I also think there is a hereditary factor. My mother had all her teeth removed after pregnancy, so as well as diet, hormones, environmental factors such as smoking, medication, I think you are right that some people inherit poor teeth from the start.

i was lucky and got registered with the NHS when they had the van at the back of CGH - i got Mr Dyson for my dentist - hes a star - very gentle - makes sure im really relaxed before he starts - as an aside - i feel sorry for the lassies in the reception at loch shell last time i was there the the roof tiles were falling in about their ears due to the wind

I'm fine with my dentist in Wick - it's the hygenists who terrify me!

I'm a complete scaredycat when it comes to having work done on my teeth as they are very sensitive. One slight prod from the hygenist and I go through the roof. I don't mind the dentist as I've been numbed before he works on me.

As my dentist said -"Your teeth are pretty good......but the gums have to come out":~(

Wish I could get a dentist and am not in a position to pay retainer fees! 6,000 people on the waiting list, I might get a NHS dentist in about 20 years, if they still exist by then!

That's what I heard twiglet and what inspired this thread.

Down here in Central you get 'struck off' after 15 months of no appointments

The dentist is one of my biggest fears. I have a good set of teeth due to this phobia but 3 years ago I had to have a tooth temporarily packed by the emergency NHS. This was done at Wick and I have to say the event was nothing less than horrific. The dentist was informed I was phobic, could see I was phobic but still slammed his torture tools down and shouted that I should get psychotherapy before tainting his doors again - this was while I was sitting in the chair. Eventually he managed to get the tooth packed (it was either that or extraction and he said the tooth was too good for extraction). He then told me that the packing was temporary and would need doing permanently somewhere else as they wouldn't do it!!!! :confused
That packing lasted just over 2 years and then came out on our way down to a funeral in Essex last June. Luckily my sis in law is a dental nurse and I got in straight away and saw a very nice man that was extremely good with phobics but again he could only temporary pack.
That packing decided to come out today and now I'm all of a dither. What to do?????????? I'm half tempted to leave it till the pain is so bad that I have to go but the other half knows I'm being a baby. One thing I do know for sure is that I'm not letting them NHS emergency people send me to the Wick practice. Absolutely no way!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know whether the new practice at Wick is available on the emergency system? Or even the hospital??? Can I insist on a permanent filling? I really don't see the point in my going through a temporary pack again when I know I'll never get a filling, on the other hand an extraction seems a dire waste of a good tooth.

The new Lochshell clinic does take emergency appointments but you won't get a permanent filling.

I had a hole in my tooth for a whole year and I still only chew on the opposite side from sheer habit. I was lucky enough to jump the waiting lists when I was pregnant and now I have a permanent NHS dentist at last, even the baby has been for a check-up. I must say I am impressed with the new place, you get seen almost right away and on your way again in about 20 - 30 minutes, no hanging around in the waiting room there waiting for the anaesthetic to work!

It's the same here :confused, that's how I became dentist-less

Well im on the nhs and have a polish lady as a dentist and i have no confidence in her i wish i never changed dentist thats the first time i have felt that way towards a dentist.
I had root canal treatment done and when it came to killing the nerve in the tooth it was sore full on pain if i had known that before i would have just got it pulled out less pain im almost convinced the dentist didnt jab me in the right places Im very much tempted to go back to a private dentist and pay more for less pain

I have been private for years Bridgend in Thurso as had no choice I had Root Canal treatment done zillions of fillings etc once a certain dentist left I lost faith as petrified of dentists ( because of childhood experiences )and he had built my confidence up

moved here and does it cost a fortune Hygenist etc and I moaned about Thurso prices

OH was in the Royal Navy for 23 yrs and had dental care regulary teeth great had a wee problem back end of last year was referred to a specialist and thank goodness ok cost a lot for treatment but worth it

Long story but basically same as all the other horror ones. Certain dentist that used to own Bridgend was an absolute star. I got all mine taken out in one sitting, they knocked me out and couple of days of gore later i was Mr Gummy. Keeping hold of falsers is my only problem, last time i lost them down the pan there were reports of shark attacks in the bay

ive no problem with going to see the dentist, it was the problem of getting one that stumpted me. i was with Dr Gordon when he retired, then cos we moved house (acutally we bought Dr Gordons house!!!!!!) i never got the letter about re-registering. my hubby registered with Bridge End and the kids could go there under his membership, but as hes working away in England, he changed to a dentist down there (just as well since i believe Brigde End have started to charge membership for kids!) and the cosmetic work of getting an implant cost half as much as BE quoted!!

2 years ago my youngest son(then aged 3 1/2) needed to see the dentist with toothache and BE refered him to Caithness Generals child dentist as he wouldnt cooperate, upshot being that when CG dr go a look he needed extractions and was refered to raigmore where they knocked him out and removed 6 baby teeth,(turned out he had not developed any enamel on his molars and the were falling apart)

as ive been getting toothache in my wisdom tooth (and being pregnant again so i know it wont cost me!!) i finally got round to phoning the NHS helpline to register, so me and all 4 kids are now registered at Lochshell with out first appointment next week. should be interesting to see if son will let them look as his first experiences with dentists werent great

I've heard that there is a hugh waiting list at Lochshell, but when I made an appointment I was seen quite quickly, got tha appointments for the work to be done within a couple of weeks.
But even with the quick service theres no way I'm going back there. The dentist (can't remember his name but he was one of the polish trainees) made such a mess of what he was doing, I still can't close my teeth together fully because he put too much filling in one of my teeth, and most the time he was giving me extra anasthetic, because the first lot "didn't work" even though I could feel that the first lot was totally in the wrong place for where he was going to be working. AND, on top of that, the first day I went in was because of toothache, I told him that it was causing me alot of pain, he just said he'd do another one and come back to it next time, and then the next time, and then the next time.
In the end I was so put-off by him that my mum is putting me to a private dentist now, which is gonna cost so much more, because as a student, with the NHS I was getting everything for free, but now having to pay full whack for it. Suppose it's better to get it done properly now rather than have to pay to get it ripped out and sorted later.

Alas, I have to venture out of the coal shed and into the real world occasionally to top up on mind-bending narcotics.

And the french maid keeps me otherwise occupied as well.........

I have nothing but painful memories of dentists in Wick. Is the dental portion of NHS broken or are things bad only in the north? Dentists here are wonderful and there are tons of them from which to choose.

I'm on the NHS list, as someone mentioned there's 6,000 people in front of me waiting to get on. We do a fair bit of travelling in Eastern Europe, what with the cheap flights; http://www.itravelnet.com/transport/lowcostairlines/europe.html (http://www.itravelnet.com/transport/lowcostairlines/europe.html) and the dental treatment (in say Poland) is very good and cheap - well Polish dentist are coming over here, why not go to them? example:

I am a little disappointed by the attitude of the two private dentists I have had concerning NHS dentists. They themselves were once those very practitioners and now they just complain about the NHS work and are quite personal about those dentists who carried it out.

The work carried out by NHS dentists has by the very nature of their employment by the government had to be quicker and less thotough in many respects but that is not their fault.

I attended Mr Andrews in Tghurso for 30 years and he did an excellent job though I have to admit his dental hygiene work was not half as good as I now get. But then I have to pay extra for that.
