hiya guys
just been reading up on all the new info on teh flu pandemic and what they are doing to try and prevent it and fight it.
couldnt find any info online but was wondering the pandemic of spanish flu in 1918
anyone know what the damage was up here
how bad did it hit and the mortaility rates?
we would have been in the herring boom wouldnt we at that time?
i know we are quite remote but with the fishing it would have brought people in and out so it would have been easier spread.
any one have any info from the time?
much appreciated

I don't think they would have noticed it much at the time. The UK as a whole faired a lot better than other countries with only 250,000 deaths, about 0.5% of the population and those were mostly the elderly and sick in areas of high population.

Spanish Flu did reach Caithness, I know of a death recorded from it in Wick but compared to some of the epedemics they had in the past it would be mild and due to the epedemics they had in the past they would be good at limiting the effects of contageous diseases.
