open the document, select File, Save As from the menu bar, save as an appropriate format. If it doesn't list .doc (words native format) then select .rtf which will work fine with word.

Microsoft words word processors format can be opened in word.... The extension is .wps

I am 100% positive that it can be opened in word.

But the necessary translator may not be installed by default.
It may depend on MS Office being installed in Custom mode.

The RTF suggestion is an excellent catch-all solution.

as an alternative you can view copy and print many formats using word viewer 2003 available from microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en)

True. All I can say is that it seems to be default with Office 2003 and later.
