Driving past this earlier today, I noticed the "rags are getting bigger and bolder, whole shirts etc and today direct in my line of vision was a big pair of white mens Y fronts, hung from side to side of the waist band so full on. What was his complaint I wonder ?? [lol]

Any one know if the piece of clothing has to be relevant to the suffering?
I wonder which culture this originates from, seems almost Romar as they have several customs that entail letting things rot, like when you have warts, you wrap them in bacon for a short time then bury the bacon, as it decomposes the warts are supposed to disapear
The mind boggles at the Y fronts though!

fairy glen is just passed fortrose. fantastic long walk through forest then at the end you reach a spectacular waterfall !!!. there is a fallen tree that has a lucky tradition of hammering any loose coins that are in your pocket and making a wish.

I'd not heard of this place either until I read Bluelady's post tonight. I've read of similar places before. I too am intrigued by the origin.

I would think that the article of clothing would relate in some way to the suffering/condition/disease of the person who tied it there.

The Y-fronts wouldn't have surprised me. These could potentially cover a few major parts (and organs) of the male anatomy. Prostate cancer is no joke.

There is a Clunie Well in Culloden Forest , Inverness. It's a lovely walk if it's a dry day. There are rags tied for wishes and an old well you can drop pennies down for luck. ;)

If someone is ill then you should take a piece of the clothing, preferably something that will rot, cotton or woollen. As it rots the person recovers.

The Fairy Glen and the Clootie Well are not the same place. The Clootie Well sits at the side of the Tore to Munlochy road, less than a mile before Munlochy. Fairy Glen is at Rosemarkie http://www.black-isle.info/Fortrose/

Right, im with you now, I know where you mean, thanks for that, but the thing Johnno's on about with the rags is the clootie well. The fairy glen sounds nice, will see that next time I go that way. :)

The Fairy Glen at Rosemarkie is lovely for walks and we go a lot when we are down that way. Kids love it.
Still remember as a child making a wish at the clottie well....

the fairy glen is a magical place with big waterfalls and a large mill pond. Used to love walking the dog there before we moved up this way.

It's near Avoch (pronounced "Och". It's supposed to be lucky and a sign that you will return there.
