I hope this is not going to spread! First case of bluetongue in cattle in Scotland - see BBC News http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7163612.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7163612.stm) seems 35 cattle were imported from Germany and movement restrictions have been imposed on the farm near Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway..

Of course this is an imported animal and not 'home grown' but nevertheless it certainly needs watching. Our hard working farmers do not want another debacle like the recent Foot and Mouth down in England!

Unfotunately once it is with us it is virtually unstoppable. Our only hope is a cold start to the year and a cool dry summer with few midges. What a prospect - is a cool summer best or no midges.

Just before Christmas had one case from imported cow in a farm near Middlesbrough but it was an isolated case. Doesn't seemed to have caused any problems and things kept very low key.
