For those interested that need to batten stuff down, watch out for thursday night and early hours friday morning, possibly gusting to about 70 or 80mph again, starting from the west going into the northwest. Will die off in the afternoon though :)
Will get a tad breezy on tomorrow tea time too but not as bad. just a normal caithness stiff breeze.

Tut, I was about to go out and polish my wheelie bin for the big race...

Had my hopes up there ;)

Me too .. :(

I had lowered the bodywork of the bin, put on the super slick tyres and invested in a "go faster" handle.

Foiled again.

There are meant to be lots of storms this month from what I have been hearing. Is this correct tuggs?

Hi Tugmistress
Being 'out west' we're always interested in what winds we're expecting (being a we bit exposed!)..

I've been looking at this link for quite a while, have you any thoughts or ideas on this - is it any good - as you seem to know more about the weather than most..

I don't know about the month, i can only give a fairly accurate forecast up to 7 days out, but it is generally looking like a wet and windy start to the month anyway. Sorry i can't be of more use :(

I've flown out of Wick when it was blowing 70 mph. I was amazed at how smoothly the little plane took off so wind does not seem to affect the flights.

Weather Watch just been posted .... taken from here (http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=forecast;type=alerts;reg=1;sess=; )

This is a preliminary Watch for events from Thursday into Friday
By Thursday evening as the low approaches the far north of Scotland strong to gale force winds from the south west will be affecting the northern half of Scotland, especially the north west. Parts of the far north west of N Ireland and the south west approaches may also get winds of this strength. During the early hours of Friday, as the low moves east, severe gale force north west to north winds will affect the Northern Isles, with gusts of 70mph+. Other areas already mentioned are unlikely to see any increase on strong to gale force, other than the far north east of Scotland where gusts of 60mph or more may occur. By lunch time speeds will be decreasing below these values.

Rainfall in parts the country, both north and south, may exceed 25-40mm from this system, with very localised falls of 40mm+.

Some rivers are already at high levels so please refer to the appropriate flood lines.

Snow will fall over the Scottish hills along with some of the higher hill tops further south into N Ireland and the Pennines. Amounts look like being small in most cases although parts of the higher Cairngorms could get 3-8cm with strong winds creating near blizzard conditions over the Scottish ski resorts.

A further Watch or possible Alert may be issued if events warrant it and a new one issued later Thursday or Friday for possible events over the weekend.

Thanks for your wisdom, Tugmistress. With your warning, I managed to move some things (plant holders, bikes) into our shed before last night's gale to stop them hurtling down the street.
Many thanks for the forecast - you probably stopped our neighbours waking up to find the wee one's plastic lawnmower sitting on their bird table.
The rain last night as I drove home was the heaviest and most horizontal I've seen in ages.
All calm at the moment here - the sea is like a millpond. Is it too good to continue?

Just had a quick look, it should remain fairly calm today but then it's picking up again tonight in the early hours of tomorrow for another go, don't put the planters back out yet ;)
