I am researching this family:
David SMITH, married on the 14 Sept 1816 Canisbay, Caithness Isabella BAIN b:abt 1800.
They had a son Steel SMITH :1833 Canisbay married 25 Oct 1860 in Thurso Jane McKENZIE b: 1844........Janes parents were William McKENZIE 1804 Canisbay and Elizabeth CHAMBERS b:1806 Canisbay, they married on the 20th Mar 1840 in Thurso.

Isobel, are you a member of the Caithness Family History Society? On the CFHS section (only open to members) is a submission by one of the members - Anne Newcombe which contains a great deal of information on the Steel Smith that you are looking for.
There is a hyperlink on this genealogy page to the Caithness Society and the membership is very reasonable.

Isabel, the membership fee is £10 per annum. The submission by Anne Newcombe gives details of the family from 1770 onwards. Membership also gives you the Journal which is full of useful information.
P.S. I am just a long distance member of the society. I have Smith in my husbands tree, but they do not appear to be related to Steele Smith, but you never know!!

Hi, Mamie, my Smiths are my husbands family via my mother-in-law. They are nearly all from Brough, Dunnet. They start way back with nearly all the eldest sons being named George. Many of the eldest sons were Ships Captains. Just a few of the direct line are as follows:

The direct line continues through Daniel

I have a Steel Smith in my database. His parents were David Smith and Isabella Bain. I have David's parents and grandparents but nothing on Isabella. David and Isabella had ten children, Margaret b1817, John b1819, Andrew b1822, David b1825, Janet b1927, James b1830, Steel b1832, Joseph b1835, William b1837 and David Edward b1831. Steel married Jane MacKenzie and I have two children listed for them. William b1868 and Steel b1874. No further info on Steel jr but William married Elizabeth Sutherland b1867. I have one child, William Sutherland Smith b1895.

To mamie_2 I have many other Smiths listed so if you want to toss some names my way I'll look them up.

Here is what I have for Steel Smith (sr). His mother was Isabella Bain b 1796. His father was David Smith also b1796.David's parents were John Smith b 14july1768 in Thurso and Janet Corner, b10dec1777 in Canisbay. John Smith's parents were John Smith and Margaret Morson (spelling may not be correct). Janet Corner's parents were David Corner and Mary Dunbar. That is all the info I've found.

I know about John and Barbara since they are my ancestors unless you know something more about their daughter Katherine. I've traced the rest of them.

For Joseph Smith and Catherine Houston would you know anything about William, Joseph and George Sutherland? I've traced the rest of their children.

For Katherine and William Laird do you know anything more about William and Marjory?

I've traced Janet and David Nicolson's children as well.

hello isabel my gt grandad was david edward medley smith a brother of steele smith he was born 1841 at lybster (Reay) my granddad was david smith he drowned when his ship the isabella sunk of orkney at meikle skerrie in 1912
