Stroma Cottage, Canisbay

Hello Everyone,
I am researching Laird Family early 1800's and I am wondering if Stroma Cottage is actually in Canisbay or on the Island of Stroma. My Mr. Laird & family were farming 230 Acres. The 1841 Census gives address as Canisbay?

there is a Stroma Mains and Mains Cottage!!!
Which Laird do you have??

Teeny - forgot I had the census book for 1841.
On island of Stroma only Laird was Ester

Trestal East Canisbay shows a Sinclair Laird & family - Farmer aged 35.
Others in book also.

In 1871 Sinclair, wife Margaret, daughters Johanna, Andrewina, son Sinclair and granddaughter Williamina Dunnet are at Manyside Farm House in Olrig. He was farming 195 acres arable.

In 1881 Sinclair a retired farmer and wife and daughter Johanna plus 3 grandchildren are in West Canisbay.

I think he died before 1891.

Does anyone have this Ester - is Charlotte Cruickshank related.
Ester could be this one Esther born 1829 Orkney to Andrew and Janet Laird!!!

NOW I have just answered a bit of that myself since I posted the B 1829 -
NO Esther b 1829 Orkney to Andrew and Janet is not same as Esther in census 1841 Stroma Canisbay
.
1851 shows Esther still in Stroma
still with Charlotte ROBERTSON 66
Margaret Robertson Daughter aged 25
Esther Laird daughter aged 20. all born Canisbay.

1861 Esther LAIRD aged 29 Head of House
with Donaldina Manson Daug aged 8.


The Esther b 1829 is clearly in Orkney still with parents Andrew and Janet in several Census inc 1871 - after that she appears single 1881 1891 in Orkney..

There is a marriage 1862 of an Esther Laird in Canisbay to Donald Ross .28 JAN 1862 Canisbay, Caithness, Scotland
THIS is one who was born in Canisbay with mother Charlotte.!!!!!!!!
and in 1871 Elspeth b Canisbay and Donaald Ross are now in Orkney.

I have Andrew Laird and Janet Laird in my tree so would be interested in any info you might have on them. I have their dates of death but no census info apart from 1821. I have 5 children but no Esther(!) so that's new info for me.
the children I have are:
Mary 1814 died 1864 - she married James Banks originally from Stroma - this is my connection to the family.
