That's really weird ... my sister-in-law rang the other weekend and said "I've just watched some movie about where you live and it was all about it being under water, all you could see was rooftops poking out above the sea..." I told her to pull the other one, as I thought she must have been drinking too much coffee. Seems like I'll have to ring her back now and apologise.
A disaster movie set in Wick? Now that ought to get the jokes coming thick and fast. ;)

I only watched the first 10 minutes. It was like a scene from Take The High Road. Looked like a load of rubbish to me but I might give it another try later.

A disaster movie set in Wick?

An inspired choice of location for that particular film genre, I'd imagine.

Got the film ages ago but never got round to watching it. Have just watched first 5 minutes and I nearly fell off my seat. The "town" of wick looks like something from the set of greyfriars bobby or brigadoon with all the mist and ancient chimneys!! Never knew we were so outdated :).
Will still watch it though as looks a good movie.

Hope not that its set in Wick as the follow up to trainspotting is "Porno" !!!!
Can think of a few .orgers who might audition for it ;) .

FLOOD is being shown in two parts on ITV this Bank Holiday weekend.
Part 1 on Sunday 4 May (2005 to 2205), Part 2 on Monday 5 May (2100 to 2300).........besides very long adverts I don't know why it is 4 hours long for what is roughly a 2 hour film. May be worth setting the video.

I bought the dvd at top price a couple of months ago. To say 'half of it is about Wick' is severe overstatement...I only wish it had o' been !
It's a bit of a turkey actually...but an endearing turkey.
Special effects are quite good and to see London, defences overwhelmed and yielding to a tidal wave of water is somehow quite soothing.

I'm not keen on London.

NO WAY.
Percy you do surprise me. And the new Charlatans album is out on the 12th May, you could hear it online on QFX website and its not bad, back to old skool Charlies. They were on Jools Holland a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to wash and cut their hair but the tune was rockin'.

I think i'll have to watch this Flood cos I love Robert Carlisle. Anyone else a Hamish MacBeath fan?

percy toboggan
03-May-08, 17:45
Don't know Hamish...the only one I know is Plockton...and that's a wee village ...wasn't it shot aroundthere..? or was it Poolewe..I forget...not that I knew in the first place.

May 12th is my birthday but if someone buys me the new album I'll bash 'em with it...:-)...I like 'em ,just not that much.
If you like Carlyle you might also enjoy 28 weeks later...although he shows his worst possible side.

just realised...isn't the 'only one I know' a Stone Roses track? Blame it on advancing age.

With the UK slowing sinking in the south (with the result that Caithness etc actually rise) then this scenario is probably not going to happen.

Maybe that is why the wind farms factories are being built in the north - it will be the only dry bit of Britain in centuries to come....

For those of you that have downloaded Google Earth, (and if you haven't, why not?), they have released a beta version which shows a predicted sea-level rise of 1 metre and the area's affected-mostly Englandshire.

Needless to say most of Scotland & the Far North will be okay,(there is a God).

Oh come on...it wasn't that bad...and I paid fourteen quid for it !
It's like a British attempt at a 'Day After Tomorrow' isn't it?
Its redemption lies in the fact that it is British. The special effects are not bad...even in the first minutes..with that Granny and her middle aged daughter being drooned...I found that a mite shocking to be honest..a blunt intro whic set the scene...sadly it all went a bit downhill from there.
Another redeeming factor was the mention ( or several mentions) of Wick! I mean, have you ever heard the toon mentioned in a film before? (if so, let me know...cause I haven't)
One day I'll watch it again....perhaps when I'm tired and need a kip.
I've seen bigger turkeys though...and not just at Christmas.

Why on earth would anyone buy it when it was on tv for free? I watched it in some fascination - like all disaster movies most of the main characters survive to the end against all the odds. With one exception in this case - a noble gesture ending in death. What puzzled me was how on earth the mother from Wick, who wasn't drowned with the granny, finished up in the Greenwich camp to be reunited with her family. Her hair was wet so she'd obviously come straight from nearly drowning in Wick.

Nice touch at the end - they put up the floodline number for anyone concerned about local flooding :) . Is there nothing these days that doesn't have to be followed by a helpline? The sad thing is, it was serious - they really thought we needed it.

It was an enjoyable film, not sure which route to Wick he took, but it looked like the mud road on the Thurso estate and one of fountain forestry areas. Just no river there.

It was formulaic.....and very, very, very long.

Some judicious editing and a few surprise losses would have made for a more exciting film.

Everyone you expected to survive did and those who you expected to die also did....including the father character played by Tom Courtney who I could spot as the sacrificial hero from the beginning:roll:

Er...'cause it was released about eight months ago...because I don't 'miss' fourteen quid, and because I have a dvd collection which brings me some small pleasure. I also like the 'extras' because I'm interested in the film-makers art.

Does that explanation help?

Ok - it was a silly question, more of a comment on the film really although £14 does sound rather a lot. How the rich live (sigh  ). Most films seem to end up on tv eventually so I just wait but I'd never heard of this one before.

But Percy, Wick wasn't on it. The name was and that was it...
However i watched it to the bitter end and then cursed myself for wasting 4 hours of my time. But then Robert 'Begbie' Carlisle was in and and hubba hubba. Although it might have been a bit more entertaining if he turned into Begbie half way through it. 'Like say ken an that'

I know it was rubbish but how come it was all hands to the deck to save London when most of the East coast of Britain would have been stiffened. We'd be a few Orgers down then. And would the server have been washed away?

Good cast, really bad writing, what a shame.

MadPict
06-May-08, 20:49
I'm sure they just used Wick as it was the furthest north on the mainland usually represented on any weather maps/forecasts.
I seriously doubt if the did any research into Wick (like most of the town is 20 to 30 metres above sea level) otherwise they might have shown the houses as slightly more modern.

Good cast? Hmmm, have to say it was like an actors retirement home - Tom Courtenay, Nigel Planer, Joanne Whalley, David Suchet... Have of them looked like they were in need a some Sanotogen...

Robert Carlisle and his wife were up here a few years ago, they had coffee and cake in the cafe in Johnston the bakers in Thurso. Thought I heard somebody tell him that it always p`s rain in Wick, that`s why it`s called the `dark side` of Caithness.

It is possible that he suggested the name, but maybe it is all a coincidence?

Maybe he just thinks that everywhere north of Glasgow resembles Lochdubh, everyone has a peat fire heating their but 'n' ben and eats haggis all the time...

Or maybe he was brainwashed by the 'tea 'n' bowlies' to wipe out all the 'Wickers' [lol]...

Did you happen to see what they put in the coffee or the cake? That might explain his wooden-like effort in "Flood". ;)

Maybe he just thinks that everywhere north of the Ord resembles a true Haven, everyone has a peat fire heating their but 'n' ben, the peat having been delivered, with nil cost, by Scottish Fuels and eats haggis some of the time...

Or maybe he was brainwashed by the 'tea 'n' bowlies' to wipe out all the 'Wickers' [lol]...

I'll go with your latter theory and blame the "tea 'n' bowlies" MadPict.

BTW, Haggi are notoriously difficult to trap or shoot. Some tourists have been known to question why the price of a female haggis is higher. :D

I watched the programme Flood that your all on about...Yeah its nice to see our local area's on TV but I just wish they did come up and film it properly and not show Wick looking like what they did...As if anyone noticed there were hills in the back ground and unless I am wrong but Wick doesn't even look like that. And its a shame cos its very annoying that they cannot get things right when there ment to be filming somewhere... The place on Flood could of been anywhere and nobody would know where or what it was until they said it was Wick......:Razz

The latest series of "Heroes" may have fallen foul of artistic licence in their depiction of Cork in Ireland...

It showed the street the crew had built on a carpark at the rear of the Heroes studio. The scene looked like something from the 50's and the pub was some rundown dirty looking dump. The Cork container port was easy enough - 50 odd containers set out on the lot.

Usually the reproduction of US places is pretty good (the whole of the first series was filmed in and around LA) - maybe someone found an old postcard sent by a long dead relative when they were on vacation in Ireland....

when I watched 'Loch Ness' I was given a bit of insight as to how the Americans viewed scotland. It's depressing to know that the english depict us as much more backward! I think film makers have a duty to inject some sense of authenticity into their films. I mean all they had to do was log on to the org!
