Following on from Cedric's best Scottish female vocalist thread, I'd like to ask everyone this:

Who's your favourite Scottish male vocalist of all time?

I have a few favourites, some of them being Gerry Rafferty (of "Baker Street" fame), Jack Bruce (formerly of Cream), and Marti Pellow of Wet Wet Wet.

Marti Pellow, where is my bucket [lol]

I am determined not to mention the R word it would be too easy and i can't stand his cockney accent. But here is a few to throw on the fire. Jim Kerr (Simple Minds), Midge Ure (don't like him too much), Andy Stewart (yeeehooo), I like the guy from Snow Patrol but can't remember his name. But I think if I was to state my favourite over recent decades then it has to be BOBBY GILLESPIE from primal Scream!!! My all time favourite without a doubt and probably the best Scottish Vocalist OF ALL TIME EVER has to be ALEX HARVEY, no question, hands down, easy peasy!

recap:

Alex Harvey
Bobby Gillespie
Jim Kerr
Midge Ure
Andy Stewart

I have to mention Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson, otherwise knows as The Corries. Maybe not the best vocalists technically, but their voices fit together perfectly, and listening to songs like Massacre of Glencoe has always sent a shiver up my spine, they're the best at what they do.

I'm laughing my socks off at your response, Jeemag! I have to admit I prefer Marti with Wet Wet Wet to his solo efforts, (even though I do enjoy those for the most part.) I take it you'll not be rushing to buy Wet Wet Wet's new album "Timeless", then? ;-) It's due out next week with marvellous Marti at the helm once more! :-D

Good shout check, I knew George when I was at university, he was a mature student doing politics. At that time period ,late 80's, he had a wee blues band called The Blues Poets. At the time his first band the Poets were signed ( 1965 ) he was also offered pro terms with Glasgow Celtic, some geezer, amazing harp player and singer. Billy Mac, a one off, not sure about the Blue Nile geezer though

John Martyn has a sublime voice and has written some of the greatest songs ever.

Amongst singers that good there is no hierarchy, merely difference.

Donovan has a beautiful voice.

Bon Scott is the greatest rock singer of all time, if Alex Harvey is squeezed into the 'avante-garde rock' category....

Edwyn Collins is the real deal.

Talking about forgetting some folk, I forgot to mention Ian Anderson, "The Voice of Jethro Tull"! To be perfectly honest, I only learned within the past few years that he is a Scot. I always thought he was English, as that is how he sounds when he sings.

There is an old story about a Sutherland man who was having an affair with a farmers wife. One day the farmer comes back from the fields early and finds them together so he goes and gets his shotgun and blasts the man right in his matrimonial prospects with bird shot.

The man runs off and is found naked and bleeding at the side of the A9, they rush him to Raigmore where they pick out the shot then the doctor frowns, shakes his head and says "there is nothing more I can do but if you go up to the fish farm at Strathaird and ask for a man called Ian Anderson he'll be able to help you".

"Is he a surgeon?" asked the man "No" replied the doctor "but he can teach you how to hold it so you don't get your shoes wet".

One name sprang straight to mind, immediately I read the question: Fish. Excellent vocalist (and I still very much like Marillion)

Nik Kershaw was always a pretty excellent musician and clever vocalist too. The Riddle was a terrific track.

Not only is he a Scot, but he also lived for a while in Helmsdale! His grandfather lived all his life there, now Edwyn owns his gran'-faither's hoosie. Did a programme on the area for STV, seemed really sincere about it too - loves collecting fossils from the beach apparently...

Dunno if he's been up in a while tho, since he's been extremely unwell. There are few songs about the region one of his solo albums apparently, with lyrics all about the Whaligoe steps!

Edwyn had a stroke, but he is on the up again.

One of my pals is in his band, and it is a funny tale how I met him.

I was trying out a guitar and the assistant (actually owner) was noodling the riff for Girl Like You. I joked to my mate I was with, that is lalala, fed up of it it is all you hear on the radio. Assistant says it is him playing it on the record!

I do think that actor/singer John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness of Dr Who and Torchwood) has a fabulous voice! He *is* a Scot, although he sounds American. He was born in Glasgow to Scottish parents, and they moved to the USA when he was 8 or 9 years old. When John was 23, he moved back to the UK. His recently released album "Another Side" is testimony to his terrific voice. His cover versions of pop songs from the 70s and 80s are wonderful, and his diction is perfect! :)

Well I was watching a documentary on the 1960's last night and as a result remembered one glaringly obvious person who has not been mentioned in this thread yet, to be honest I had forgotten he was Scottish until I heard him talking on this documentary about his bands contribution to the British Invasion of the USA in the 60's. And he did sing with one of the best rock bands of all time. And I do think he has to be in with a shout of being in the top 10 male Scottish Vocalists of all time. So this thread needs to have his name in it ;)

10 brownie points for those who can guess who I am talking about?

Clue: ......... Born in Bishopbriggs, to musical parents who moved around a lot, attended 14 different schools before ending up at Bellahouston Acadamey. Studied Jazz and became a double bass player?
