On a telephone the numbers go

while on a calculator they go

anyone know why they are different?

It is so, in order that today's "thick" kids do not try to call their mates using the calculator!!

Earlier pilot schemes to identify these mainstays at a glance tried marking the two items with giant, snap-on covers that read MOBY and CALCKY but confusion ensued when the classic novel Moby Dick was covered in English lessons.

It's as a result of the usual problem, somebody's ego. "I don't like the way they do that so I'll do it differently and force them to change to my way!"
