Did any other Orgers here in the far north this morning notice the absolutely amazing orange light as the sun came up? It's only just faded, but the whole of our house was lit up by the most awesome glow ... unfortunately my digital camera was out of batteries, but perhaps someone else captured it?? Magic stuff, or is it a sign of poor weather to come?

It was like a scene out of war of the worlds with the red glow, seriously wierd, but very pretty.

Almost worth getting up for............

Yes, this morning’s sunrise was magnificent - seeing it from the beginning just after seven am and evolve into a blaze of glory was breathtaking!

I seen it too I thought It was awesome. At 7;45 it was balck but by 8 it was,as my daughter described "dad its pink!!"
It was really weird think it may have something to do with their supposed to be a massive full moon last night, though never seen it as it was pitch black!!

Be interesting to see some pics as my mermory card was playing up :(

The cloud formation was amazing. It felt like there was a golden ceiling above us as I drove to work. I remember being on holiday once and taking a bus trip and everyone was ooh-ing and ah-ing at the lovely sunset but to be honest it wasn't a patch on an ordinary Caithness sunset or sunrise. We have some really amazing ones.

I suspect that the misfortune of the Californians may have something to do with the sunrise. The smoke particles will be making for some spectacular sunrises and sunsets for a few days.

It was really weird and surreal, I found it just a bit creepy. Everything had a yellow tint.

Grumpyhippo can you tell me how you took that picture, i saw it at 7am, tried it with my camera on auto setting, got a black screen, so then set it to night settings, all i got was a nice red line with a few house lights, what am i doing wrong?

Beautifully captured Grumpyhippo - the formation and colouring were both intense and breathtaking.

I took it on aperture priority on 100 asa but the exposure is automatic. It sounds as though your camera was trying to under expose your picture. Try pointing your camera at a dark area as you gently squeeze the button and hold the button down as you reframe the shot. For most cameras this will 'force' the exposure for the darker areas. It usually takes a bit of trial and error to get it right but give it go, let me know how you get on.
The picture above is a panorama of 4 frames merged together but other than convert from RAW to jpeg there was no processing at all.
For a while the light was very unusual and then towards 9 o'clock it changed back into the normal Caithness grey.
Even the sheep seemed confused by it all.

Good point, Ricco - I hadn't considered whether the ash and smoke from California might have contributed to the colour. I can remember when Mount Pinatubo (sp?) in Indonesia erupted, in Australia we had magnificent sunrises and sunsets for quite a while afterwards.
I saw some images on the NASA website this week of the smoke from the fires in California - they released an incredible amount into the atmosphere, judging by the photos.
Perhaps some of our weather/science boffins might be able to add to this?

what an amazing sight the sky was this morning never seen anything like it i am a great believer in the saying Red sky at night shepards delight Red sky in the morning shepards warning. well if this is truly the case i am dreading what the weather has in store for us.

I thought i was imagining things myself, so i rose and looked out the bedroom window and it was amazing. I've never seen the sky so orange before. My other half slept right through it. The pictures posted are beautiful by the way and the one over Thurso was just like Wick this morning as well.;)
