if YOU were perhaps taking a trip down south for whaterver reason.. would you there for not want to know where the petrol is cheaper on your way down?
and actually when we go to inverness once a month i fill up .. and amazingly it lasts me to when i go back down unless i take several trips to thurso..

Travelled up the road today and noticed that the price differential between here and south is now much less. Why it that ?

Here's an email I got sent this week, sounds good in principle. Please copy and paste and send on to as many people as possible!

Seems like a good idea to be repeated....
>>See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it .
>>
>>We are hitting 95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced
>>with paying £1 a ltr.
>>
>>Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
>>This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain
>>day" campaign that was going around last April or May!
>>The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we
>>wouldn't
>>continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol.
>>
>>It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for
>>them.
>>BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
>>really work.
>>
>>Please read it and join in!
>>
>>Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us
>>to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take
>>aggressive
>>action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not
>>sellers.
>>With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need
>>to
>>take action.
>>The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is
>>if
>>we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we
>>can
>>do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:
>>For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two
>>biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
>>If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce
>>their prices.
>>If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to
>>follow
>>suit.
>>But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso
>>and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!
>>
>>Now, don't whimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll
>>explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
>>
>>I am sending this note to a lot of people.
>>If each of you send itto at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and
>>those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)
>>... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation
>>of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!
>>
>>If those three million get excited and pass this on toten friends
>>each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!
>>If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED
>>MILLION PEOPLE!!!
>>Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people.
>>That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP)
>>
>>How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out
>>To ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION
>>people
>>could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!!
>>
>>I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did
>>you!
>>
>>Acting together we can make a difference.
>>
>>If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
>>
>>PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a
>>LITRE
>>RANGE
>>
>>It's easy to make this happen.
>>
>>Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco,
>>Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc.
>>
>>i.e. boycott BP and Esso.
>>

Is it not strange that we have always been roughly 8 or 9p per litre dearer than your average price in Inverness, I now note we are about 3p per litre dearer?

It would seem that the petrol stations up here don’t want to break the £1 barrier and seem to have stuck.

If they can do that now, why not before!!!!

Or how about this conspiracy theory, the cartel knows that Tesco is coming with cheaper petrol, so they are using this 'build' period to realign their prices to down south.

This will not have the same obvious impact on prices if they start to realign their prices after Tesco comes.

It is the Cartel's way of saying 'Hey, our prices aren't so bad afterall!!'

And we will all blindly agree and we will all wonder why Tesco's fuel prices aren't that cheaper and not having the big Earth moving impact on the surrounding garages.

The far north fuel cartel isn't stupid you know...

how can you read "the cartel know tesco is coming"
and come up with they are not here yet ?????
we know they are not here yet
but rheghead seems to have insider information

but rheghead seems to have insider information

It was a conspiracy theory not fact.

But hey, here is another conspiracy theory to explain why the gap between fuel prices in the south are narrowing to those in Caithness.

The far north fuel cartel (FNFC) freeze their prices during the Tesco planning application period to allow the south to catch up with inflation because of higher oil prices. They do not do this because they KNOW Tesco is coming but because they want to scupper their planning permission process.

How?

Here goes.

Fuel prices now are not the usual 15p difference but now ~5p or as Captain Chaos says 3p difference. In the not too distant future, the final planning application comes up for approval by Highland councillors. These councillor are elected by the people to represent them in their best interests (in theory  ).
They discuss the application in the chambers

Councillor A at the meeting asks the question "What is the benefit of Tesco coming to Caithness?"

Councillor B says "They will stabilize fuel prices and provide extra choice for Caithnessians"

Councillor A says "Why do we need a mega store to stabilize fuel prices when the difference in the far north per litre is only 3p?"

The other councillors all agree that councillor B has his facts wrong and they decide that there is no need to stabilize fuel prices, they also express concern that allowing a megastore to build in Wick would put local jobs at risk.

They all vote and the planning application is rejected.

The FNFC start widening the fuel gap again, safe in the knowledge that their profits are intact.

We are back to square one.

The FNFC is not stupid you know...

Heres another conspiracy theory.
Theres not a councillor in Caithness would dare reject Tescos planning application!

Is there any truth in the rumour that when Presto built the supermarket in Thurso they installed petrol tanks underground with a view to building a petrol staton later?
