Anyone else getting really fed up of receiving SPAM mail? Still waiting for your cousin Roeburt Makdoogal from Nigeria to pass on the fortunes of his vast estate after his untimely death? Here's very simple advice of how it gets on there.

Spam mail is most commonly received by persons getting a hold of your e mail address. Most people think that the SPAMMERS only get your address by the receiving individual logging onto competition or porn sites (each to their own).

The most normal way of people getting hold of your e mail address however is people sending each other those emails that end "Send to 10 people to receive good luck/fortunes/fame. Failure to send it will result in a horrible death type thing". A copy of your address will also end up going back down the line and being stored, sold and used by medical companies, porn sites, and fraudsters.

It is really infuriating to see these e mails coming back and forth. If you are unfortunate to receive one, scroll down it or look at the full delivery history and see how many e mail addresses it has been sent to already. Even if you don't reply someone else on that list will and your details are returned to the source for selling on.

My only advice is to tell people to stop sending the things on. If you do receive one your already nailed. Just inform your service provider/virus software provider using the on screen prompts of what to do.

I don't think anyone has had a freak yachting accident brought about by not sending one on to 73 close friends.

The people are unscrupulous and use heart string tugging etc to ensure people send them on (eg Madelaine Mccann/Orphans/Disasters/Tibetan tree climbing sheep etc).

Whenever I receive a 'chain email', I immediately send it on, you never know how it may affect some people if you don't send it straight to the BIN!

thank goodness that someone else hates these return to 10 people e-mails too. and for good reason. i wondered about the Spam myself the other day.

personally i call the 'reply to 10 people' e-mails the reply or
'a pigmy hippo carrying a clown and seven dwarves all juggling live bears wearing pink pyjamas will invade your house/office/caravan and tickle you until you wet yourself' e-mails,

but thats just me.

and why the name Spam? does it look and taste like the filling and tasty yet full of fat meat product?? can you make fritters with it? (remember them from primary school dinners?) do they come in tins with a funky design on? i quite like Spam so i vote we should have a motion to change the rubbish e-mails to something i don't like - like Brussel Sprouts or phone bills.

Dook,

You are wrong about these emails!
Just a couple of days ago my car was crushed by a sailing boat falling off a low loader. Now that's what I call a freak yachting accident.

I should have passed that email on, I know I should.

Seriously, can be a pain. I can get up to 60 spam emails a day all from the same company. Trouble is, they are shifting the email address slightly with each email so blocking doesn't work. If I go to their website, their 'remove' facility is (suprise, suprise) a broken link.

I've never passed on an email in my life and the emails are to my business email address. - Which I never use for casual surfing.

Drives me mad.

As someone who went away for 6-days and came back to 19½ THOUSAND e-mails (all bar 7 being junk) I can safely say I HATE SPAM! Having my own domain name means I can't even change e-mail addresses so I have to resort to a number of filters to reduce it to about 100 - 200 a day :(

From Monty Pythons 'Spam' sketch.

Cafe scene with Vikings sat in corner:

Customer: What's on the menu?

Waitress: Spam, chips and spam, egg beans and spam, spam spam bacon and spam, spam with more spam --oh and a bit of spam, spam spam spam spam egg and spam, spam spam peas spam spam venison spam and spam, ( this goes on for quite some time and then the Vikings begin singing "Spam wonderful Spam") etc etc.

It became common in early internet days to call anything pointless, umwarranted and needlessly repeated 'spam'.

Hope this spams things up for you.

I wrote myself a little CGI script in perl that checks the server and displays all my emails one per line in my web browser. I just select the ones I want to keep and the rest are zapped all in one go.

Makes life a lot easier.

LOL Jan maybe it's because your email is very girlie they take the chance that you may be girlie..and desperate [lol] Then again I think it's just the senders that are desperate to sell whatever it is they are selling, you could always ask them for a free trial  x

It sounds like it could be well worth your while downloading an email spam program such as Spamhilator which is free to use

http://www.spamihilator.com/

I've used it quite successfully and it learns easily what to put in your inbox and what not to!

It's so nice to know I'm not alone, jan! I've been getting lots and I've no idea why I get them either. My email address is also obviously female.

I've now blocked all the obvious words, and any potentially dodgy phrases such as "increase the size" in the heading. Spamkiller sends most of the rest directly to my junk mail anyway, but I do still get some rather strange invitations....

I get about 1 spam a month now whereas I used to get 1000s. AOL has really tightened up their act fortunately.

I got 103 spams yesterday - that's one day's worth! I am so annoyed that I sent an e-mail to my ISP support team making a complaint and threatening to leave for another ISP. No reply though![disgust]

Why blame the ISP? It's not their fault that you have been using your email address to sign up for stuff.

Any reputable ISP would be taking anti-spam measures anyway, as a matter of course. By the time you are getting so much, I would guess that you have nobody to blame but yourself. Use a secondary email address for signing up for things, and leave your main email address for the important things.

Oh, and by the way, you'd be better off changing your email address instead of your ISP.
