‘Socialism 2005’ - a weekend of political debate and discussion, organised by the Scottish Socialist Party will take place this year on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October in Glasgow Caledonian University.

Looking for answers? Outside the festering corpse of the New Labour Party there is plenty of lively, open discussion taking place. If you are fed up with privatisation of our schools and health service, disgusted with the UK’s warmongering, worried about the environment, and inspired when workers take action against employers then this will be of interest to you.

This event takes the form of a choice of simultaneous sessions discussing a wide variety of topics. Comments and questions from the floor are encouraged.

Some highlights will be George Galloway speaking at the opening rally along with Gill Hubbard, Rosie Kane, Tommy Sheridan and Matt Wrack the new General Secretary of the Fire Brigade Union;
Salma Yaqoob will speak along with Colin Fox, and others at the closing rally.
Eamonn McCann will be speaking on “The State and ‘War on Terror’ ”
Mike Gonzalez will be speaking on Latin America and Alex Callinicos will debate with John Holloway, one of the world's leading autonomous theoreticians, on "Can We Change the World Without Taking Power?"

Some of this years themes will be - LATIN AMERICA IN REVOLT; WAR & IMPERIALISM; WHAT WILL SOCIALISM LOOK LIKE?; WHAT LURKS BEHIND THE G8? and OPPRESSION AND LIBERATION.

Several hundred people will be attending this event, a small fee is charged to cover costs.
Creche available. There will be entertainment in the evenings and accommodation is available for those living outwith the Central Belt. Apply early for transport from the North and accommodation from the Friday night. Contact Frank on 01862 811233.

inspired when workers take action against employers .

This results in stopped production, higher costs, higher prices, lack of competitiveness, job losses and ultimately businesses going bust. If not bust then Government subsidy then higher taxation, then more economic hardship to everyone.

No, I am not inspired by industrial action against employers.

I agree with Captain Chaos, open message boards are not politcal platforms, this type of rhetoric should be kept at the foot of the Mound or some such ilk

Socialism was as radical an idea in the 19th century as genetic engineering is today. Since then it has become engrained in our culture and much of the freedom we take for granted today has its roots in socialism.
Socialism gave the ordinary man power but because of the nature of power it corrupted him and turned him into ......Golach and Rheghead and Pepsi Challenge and Captain Chaos and Kennymac. ;)
Thank Marx for God!

I have to laugh.
A mesageboard is an appropriate place for people to publicise events. It is after all a more open forum than some would apparently like it to be. Openness plays a part in the popularity of Caithness.Org
Golach, Rheghead, Pepsi Challenge, Captain Chaos and Kennymac are regular contributers to these columns. Indeed some of these anonymous saddoes seem to have nothing better to do than trawl this mesageboard, opinionating on everything, such opinions usually of the Conservative kind. Not that I'm complaining, as long as they refrain from racist or fascist comments.

Grumpy old men?
Reactionary old farts more like !

:D :D :D Sorry guys - after reading his post I just had to giggle at the look on your faces when you read his charater opinions of you - Reactionary Old Farts? Aw c'mon frank? These guys are good guys, establishers that fromed the establishment - if golach wasn't such a grumpy old man the world would fail to spin!!!

And he wouldn't be able to take my Jambo annoyance every now and then without smiling nicely and saying nothing. We need guys like Rheggers, golach and the like to keep caithness.org going - as you said,.....openness plays a part in the popularity of caithness.org and they are being open - about posting your post where it should be - events! :p

Oh how I laughed at your opinions Frank. :D :D :D

Weeboyagee hit it on the nail

A message board is a message board and events are just that - events.

Any political, racist or fascist soapbox lectures should be avoided. Stick to the point if you want to let your event be known in the Events, but drop the political drivel in the message board

" drop the political drivel in the message board"

I agree captain. but shurely you don't mean ME?

I'm interested in the Socialists, though I have struggled to see how they could "work". Because, after all, we're greedy; we want things. Still, their rallies are usually entertaining.

champagne baby is 'sick of seeing political peddling by frank'.
Sorry babe but it seems you must be sipping too much of the bubbly.
I post, on average, less than once per week on this site, not all of them political, and not half as daft as some. Are you really that easily offended?

The bar is open at 'Socialism 2005' but I don't think we'll see much champagne there.

Certainly willna be seeing me there anyway

Quite often when you post frank it seems you have to twist the topic round to politics.

I'm not going through individual postings to prove this point as i can't be bothered but that's the overall opinion i have of you.

No i'm not offended, just fed up of reading it - i'm not really a political person.

I don't mind Frank posting his notices here.

I could talk politics with him if he wants but usually lefties buckle under the truth.

I encourage inclusiveness, and the more voices - good, bad, or ugly - that are heard on this messageboard the better. It's an old adage, but if no-one likes what they read, just choose not to respond.

I agree with pepsi challenge on this. Surely all points of view are interesting and challenging and i do beleive that anything that gets people - especially young people - talking about and interested in politics is not a bad thing.

Squidge, I used to be a loony raving left-wing shipyard working ex shop steward fitter come veggie in my teens and early twenties until I got mugged by reality.

Yes, talking about politics in an informed way does bring out the best views in folk.

Now I am nearly 40 something, I remain a middle of the road non-extremist blairite. ie a conservative(from the 70s) in all but name...

Squidge, do you see what he called me, "a reactionary old puff of gas" !!!! [disgust] ( I would not lower myself to use the language that he uses), but maybe that language is the gutter tongue that his party use and understand. [mad]

Thats it see!!!! You get to do the over the top stuff in your teens and twenties, you got to be radical and exciteable and all the sorts of things that young people SHOULD be. Now you have settled into middle of the road middle age - theres nothing wrong with that and lets hope lots of young people still do that radical and exciteable stuff.

And Golach sweetie i bet you were the same in your youth - Frank doesnt know you like i do so he cant see the passion and the firebrand we all know and love!

:D Awww, see Frank? See wot you did to golach?.....ya made him grump - just like the Jambos did at the weekend (soz golach! lol) next I'll be told to stop peddlin' the football rhetoric (as if,....not while we're at the top I'll not!!!! :p ) and keep to the thread!

You get to do the over the top stuff in your teens and twenties.......

....theres nothing wrong with that and lets hope lots of young people still do that radical and exciteable stuff.
I've just signed up for evening classes at Thurso tech to study "conforming to classification". Bet I get thrown out, suspended or WORSE - they call in my parents to get them to have a word with me ;) I love the radical and exciteable - except when it gets me into trouble!

Lefties, Righties, or Suidge's Middle of the Roadies?(lol)......definitely right of centre here, ok, ok, ok, I know,......following recent threads that should be no surprise to some of you,.....pass the champagne babe,.....hic!,.....and gimme back my lollipop!

golach, sweetie and passion in one sentence,...add hibee and I'm off to have a giggle again! I'll go back in my box when we fall off the top pal!

Theres worse than the Scottish Socialist party evolved from Socialism.
Would you believe the fundamental Christianity on the move in America at the moment has much of its roots in early American Socialism amongst the tenant farmers and small landowners of Arkansas Texas and Oklahoma? Poor sods were morgated to the hilt and only had their religous beliefs to protect them from tha big bad bankers. Apparently the biggest selling weekly magazine in the USA in 1910 was the socialist "Appeal to Reason"
Seems like theres not such a big gap between the ideology of George Dubya and Frank Dubya. Scratch them and they both bleed.
