View Full Version : Sending emails when using hotel wireless networks

I am currently working away from home and staying in hotel accomodation. When I access the internet via my laptop on "The Cloud" WiFi (hotel provided service), I can receive incoming mail, but I am unable to send any mail. I can also freely access the internet.

I also tried using a Vodafone mobile USB, however encountered exactly the same problem.

I also had an error message when attempting to send from my hotmail account, however this may be an unrelated issue as I was able to previoulsy.

Can anyone advise if they are aware of any settings within outlook or internet properties that need to be changed, or is it simply a block from my home ISP (orange).

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is to do with the Outgoing Mail server setting. When you're at home you are connected to Orange and therefore your incoming and outgoing mail can happily travel through their servers. However when you're away from home connected through a different server hence why your outgoing e-mail can no longer go.

The easiest way round this problem is to access your Orange e-mail through webmail. Go on the Internet and visit www.orange.co.uk (http://www.orange.co.uk) - on the right hand side you can enter your e-mail address and password then press the Sign In button. You should be able to view, forward, reply, create and delete e-mails as required then, on your return home, just connect as normal and your e-mails will download into Outlook or Outlook Express depending on which you use.

Most operators of mail servers block unknown IP addresses from using their server for sending mail unless you have given a username/password to your server. This is really done to stop spammers, but it hits you when you are trying to send from a different network like a WiFi hot spot.

If you search for "SMTP Relay" at http://support.thecloud.net/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=5380 (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://support.thecloud.net/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=5380) they say:

"The Cloud supplies an SMTP relay to allow you to send mails while you're connected to our network.
smtp.mycloud.net
Please contact your ISP/email provider or your corporate IT department for help in changing your SMTP settings. Remember to keep a note of your existing settings as you will need to change these back when you access your email from your usual location."

Vodafone should have a similar system. Only pain is that you have to change the settings when switching from home network to guest network.

I changed my outgoing mail server to: smtp.mycloud.net

and problem solved.
