EVENTIDE
By Kath E S Gunn
N.Z.
c.1970

Someday – when I am old and grey
I’d like to have for company
A garden with the flowers I love,
Where sun would spill from skies above
On stocks, and pinks and mignonette
And dainty, purple violets.
A few tall trees set in the shade,
Gay marigolds that never fade;
A clump of Scottish heather-bells
Transplanted from my Highland hills;
And when the summer days are past
When skies are grey and all o’ercast,
Then I would like a cosy nook
Beside the fire – my favourite books,
Where I could read and sometimes dream,
Perhaps – still sew upon a seam.
Good music to delight the ear,
My heart would be attuned to hear
A violin’s soft cadence rare
To soothe away life’s dullest care.
And friends that always will be dear,
Who through the years have been sincere,
To come along and sit with me
And talk things o’er a cup of tea.
And with these things I’d be content,
The things a Loving God hath sent;
My life it would indeed by blest
At eventides, when I would rest.
