Wick Academy kicked their season off in style with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Lossiemouth at Harmsworth Park that helped lift the Scorries to the top of the Scot Ads Highland League after the first 90 minutes of action.
There was little to suggest that scoreline in the opening quarter of an hour with Lossie looking the likelier of the two teams. David Blackhall brought out a fine save from James More with a well struck 30 yard effort early in the game, then at the other end Gary Weir went close with a header from a driven near post corner.
It was the home team who got themselves in front in the twentieth minute, and from that point they never looked back. Gary Weir did well on the right wing eventually zipping in a low cross to Richard Macadie who had peeled off the Lossie defence. He took a touch then fires an 18 yard volley low across the face of the goal and into the bottom corner.
Five minutes later they doubled their advantage. A kick out from Craig Masterton was returned with interest and when Gary Weir peeled wide and squared the ball Gary Manson had time and space inside the penalty area which allowed him to scuff a right footed shot past Craig Masterton.
The scoreline got even worse for the visitors before half time and once again it was the pass and move policy in the final third which paid handsome dividends for the Scorries. It culminated with Richard Macadie's flick to Gary Weir allowing the striker to nutmeg Craig Masterton.
Early in the second half both Gary Manson and Steven Rattray met lofted free kicks into the box but neither found the target with their headers. Lossie's chance to get back into the game came just after the hour when sub Sean McIntosh picked up a loose ball and ran straight in on goal, however with only the keeper to beat the young striker hit the keeper with his effort. Typically Wick made Lossie pay for that miss. The impressive Bryan McKiddie set up Gary Weir who nearly slotted home a fourth from six yards out.
Lossie kept working away and were extremely unlucky not to pull one back when Gary Youngson's right foot cross saw Craig Morrison rise to head the ball beyond James More however it hit the inside of one post, rolled along the line before spinning past the outside of the other post; the outcome a goal kick.
In the dying stages both sides hit the post once more before Gary Farquhar crowned a fine afternoon for the Academy with a stunning strike. A well worked free kick saw Richard Macadie roll the ball back to the former St Johnstone midfielder and he drilled it into the top corner from 25 yards.
