Thanks for the lovely photos Riffman. Wish I'd seen them!
Great Pics of a Common seal.
I dont think it's necessary to keep the location of adult seals hush hush.
Most locals know where seals haul out in Caithness and besides they are a great tourist attraction.
I might add at this point that the First Grey Seal pup arrived dead on a beach in the SW England.
Caithness started seeing Grey Seal Pups in September last year so it would be a good time to remind dog walkers and ramblers to be alert to possible pups on some of our beaches.
It is important that pups are not approached or touched.
Last year the Caithness Marine Mammal Medics had to remove pups from beaches that had been adandoned by their mothers, most if not all died.
If you do see Grey Seal pup on a beach can you please e-mail the CMMM
paula@bdmlr.org.uk
Or txt me on 07762969022 and i will phone the CMMM.

In both these cases the pup was abandoned and died.
There is nothing wrong with taking pictures, but do it from a sensible distance.

Sometimes I wonder is it us watching the seals or them watching us?:confused

These 2 have seen better days
The one with swollen lower bowel and hole in upper belly seems to have recovered and is still active after a week.
The other looks like he had a few rounds with someone bigger.

Aww.I just love seals.
We go to a beach and the seals watch us. As we move away they seem to move towards us.
Can't wait to go back. They might have pups!
Don't worry we keep our distance:)

I don't mind telling people where they are, they are after all wild animals and live the own lives regardless of people gawping at them through binos. But as a photographer I hesitate to give away the locations of all my photographs.
The benefit of having a telephoto lens is that you do not need to be near them to take pictures, and they don't get disturbed.
Thanks for adding the info.

Stunning pic Seabird but think we will be north just a little too early to see any pups but could you hold an orca pod for us please?
She was still in the same place, so i couldn't resist a pic.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e307/seabird72/seals/YoungCommon1-9-07.jpg
But there is a serious side to my pics that is to monitor the health of the seals around the Caithness Coast.
Face injury.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e307/seabird72/seals/Faceinjury1-9-07.jpg
I would have liked to have got closer for a better look at the injury.
She was still in the same place, so i couldn't resist a pic.
What a gorgeous photo! That face could melt a million hearts!
How come seals always look like they 'know' so much?
The Grey Seals are having their annual gathering.
This seems to take place at the same location and same place each year.
There were over 75 seals in the Bay this morning.

Some bad news.
This little Grey Seal pup was also washed up with the tide.
So it seems some Grey Pups are early this year so please be alert when walking the beaches.

Came across this scene this morning. Of necessity it need a long lens from a long way away, therefore the quality is reduced, but the ooh aah factor is still there.

This is the first time i've seen these pictures and i have to say i am blown away by them, they are all excellent but i have to single out the one of the seals face close up, it is terrific in itself. I never tire of looking at pics of nature, whether it be her animals or her scenery. More please. Thank You.xx;)
Great pictures! Love seals and am very envious that you could get so close as to take these.
Fantastic to see both looking so healthy, and lets hope all the other pups we see are as content as this one.
CHeers for posting the photo.
Once again thank you to seabird and grumpyhippo for sharing some great pics.
So remember guys and Gales.
Keep a sensible distance when taking pics, if you scare mum away then your to close.
Dog walkers be vigilent, pups can appear on any beach in Caithness.
Scent transfer is a big fear, mum will not feed a pup that smells different.
If you see a pup on it's own, that is normal, mum needs to feed but she will still be watching.
If you are concerned then contact the BDMLR and they will alert the local CMMM.

Or txt me on 07762969822 and i will pass on any message (i'll need a location and problem)
Here is a pic or two taken today.
Conditions not ideal for pics could only manage 1/80sec at 5.6 with 400mm

The seal first seen by Grumpyhippo got a good soaking by the high tides over the weekend.
At one stage the seal vanished under a wave of water and i thought the seal might get washed away.
But he looked in good shape on Sunday in the bright sunshine.

Now that's got to be the most rolly polly seal I've ever seen Tugs!
This pup is but minutes old.
Liz they go from this to Tugs pic in about 5-6 weeks.
I was lucky with this pic, that i was able to get closer than usual because mum went off with a bull for some hanky panky.

The not so cute look at a seal, very sharp teeth! especially when in pain like this wee boy

Did you get him sorted out? Had he been in a fight?

The 'holes' you see are from other seals (usually adult males) where they will grab a youngster by the head and throw them out of their way. This pup should be at least 30kg but weighed in at 14kg.
Thats pretty rough on him, so will you be feeding him up and releasing him after?
Tugmistress
16-Nov-07, 00:13
not us no, he will be transported south, it will take about 2 to 3 months to get him ready for release
Lined up in the Cromarty Firth

Named after person who first sighted the pup.
The pup is now about 25 days old and will soon be deserted by it's mum.
But the pup will still have some company because a seal that is in moult was washed into the same Bay by the storms.

Saw this one today enjoying the sunshine...http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u217/southview7/seal003.jpg
Good healthy pup starting to moult it's white coat.
They don't eat much at that stage and will spend days just laying,
hopeful for a bit of peace and quiet
I love that smile they have when laying on their side, makes them look so content with life.
good pic.
Colin
I wish I could just lay back and look that content with life  beautiful picture :D

i love saeeing the pictures of the happy seals, i hate it when the phone rings and i have to go and rescue a poorly one :(
This seal was last seen at Sarclet, Thrumpster.
The Caithness Marine Mammel Medics would like to catch up with it to remove the net attached to the seals neck.
Seals cover long distances so it could come ashore almost any where on the East coast of Caithness.
If you do see it please call one of the numbers listed.
Please call BDMLR on 01825 765546 OR SPCA 0870 5555999
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e307/seabird72/BDMLR/Sarclet8-12-07.jpg
This pup as just finished it's moult and will be soon be learning to live in the sea.
A very large precentage will not survive until next Spring.
The number that die can vary from 30-60% depending on the area where they are born.

The grey pup season is slowly drawing to an end with just a few pups left dotted around the coast.
At this time in their development they are quite sleepy and dont register when anything approaches.
I stood within 2 feet of the white coated seal and he/she was so fast asleep he/she didn't notice.
I moved 4 or 5 yards away so i would not pose a threat, and made sufficient noise to wake him/she.
Not for the sake of a pic but so i could see the seals eyes and assess the seal health.
The first pic was taken on the 15th Dec 2007 the day the pup was born.
The second pic i took this morning 12th Jan 2008.
The pup will lose the white coat over the next week and will probably go to sea a week or two later.

The Caithness Marine Mammal Medics have had a very busy season and have worked very hard in their own time and to some extent at their own expence.
Our thanks should go out to Paula who leads the team.
Richard who has had a lot of sleepless nights feeding pups.
And to the other medics who have been out picking up sick or injured pups,
Kas, Jim, Steve.
Well done to you all.

Awww! Those pictures were fantasic! I throughly enjoyed looking at them. What big sad eyes they have. And as someone said, they do look as if they know more than we do.
Once again you have surpassed yourself with a stunning set of pictures.
Many thanks and also for all the information you post on this thread.
