Today, we educationalists in the south broke up for the 'summer'. The day was carefully orchestrated as assemblies during the first hour, followed by morning break. Then two hours of lesson and then escort the wee ones ot their coaches and wave them off. This would be followed by an hour of saying goodbye to colleagues who were leaving, a wee drink and some nibbles.

The reality was rain of monsoon proportions all day, flooding throughout the area (and the school), buses not arriving because of the floods, children running around 'delighted', 'angry', 'tearful' or just plain 'impatient'. We had them for over two hours, they ate the nibbles, colleagues went without their goodbyes and it took hours to get home.

Still, the holiday has begun - yo!

Always wondered why schools south of the border break up weeks after the Scottish schools?
When I was young the telly only improved when the English kids were "released". Has anything changed?

ours don't finish until the middle of next week, although our son's school had to close today because of the flooding risk  i don't understand why they finish so late in england and wales either - in a normal summer the best of the weather has passed and the nights are getting darker by the time they get their holidays [disgust]

No, unforunately, the tv still only improves when the main part of the UK breaks up for the hols. Used to annoy me when I was a kid as well.
