BEN MORVEN
by Marwood Sutherland
Caithness Courier 7th Nov 1951.

Towering high amid the hills,
Of flowing straths, and tiny trills,
Morven! Our own, our own rugged height,
Cathnessia's healthy pride and high delight;

Tho' oft, full oft, the mountain blast
Bursts upon thee fierce and fast,
No Sassenach gun around thy vale,
Nor spider-legged Yank in land of the Gael
Disturbs Morven's lofty peace -
Gladdening is law of Nature's lease !

Often have I in boyhood's days,
Watch the sun-god blend his rays,
Blushing thy brow in crimson and gold,
Thy rugged strength in Beauty's fold!
My native ben, thou art to me
Sike morning dew on sun kiss'd lea!

FAR FROM ERIN AND THEE
by Marwood Sutherland
Caithness Courier 30th January 1952

The sea birds are screaming, as thore,
And the Caithness cliffs their ark,
And in Thurso's beautiful Bay,
There looms a lonely barque;
A dreapy wind comes sighing
Across the Northern Sea,
Cold as my cold heart, agra,
Far from Erin and thee!

The sun is setting now, aroon,
And sure, one sweet lingering ray
Clings like a farewell kiss
From the departing day!
It joys me like a love token,
From mavourineen, machree,
To tell me she loves me still
And often thinks of me!

THURSO LASSIE
By Marwood Sutherland
Caithness Courier 3rd Sept 1952.

Let serfs sing of a duchess's fame
Let gowks applaud the titled dame
'Tis thou who sees my heart aflame -
Thurso Lassie!

Thou has no title, castle, nor land
No sparkling jewels deck thy hand
No flunkeys cringe at thy command -
Thurso Lassie!

Yet flits around with winning grace,
A sun-lit smile on queenly face,
A modest maid of hardy race -
Thurso Lassie!

With raven tresses crown'd
Thy merry eyes by Cupid bound,
Bless the day this prize I found -
Thurso Lassie!

Bonnie maiden, bright and young,
Lassie wi' the mither tongue,
A fairer form poet never sung -
Thurso Lassie!

Nut brown Cupids sweet in dew,
Her lovely eyes so kind and true,
Rosebud dropt from heaven her mou -
Thurso Lassie!

Marwood Sutherland Forse, Latheron.

Marwood's poems are marvellous, trinkie! Thanks for posting them! :)

It was interesting to see his photo and read about him on the Old Thirsa Piccies thread. He must have been a fascinating character!
