Here is one method from 2little2late

For those who are a bit unsure how to post photos.
Register with photobucket.com
You can then upload photos of your choice.
In your photo album under each photo there are three links:-
Url
Tag
Img

Copy the Img link. Go back to message board and paste the link in your reply, this automatically downloads photo without have to follow the link.

Also, for large photos, I have found that before uploading them into photobucket, resize them first. Open photo you wish to upload. Right click, then open with microsoft photo editor. In photo editor go to image, then resize. Whan the resize box appears I always resize the pixels rather than measurements. I find that resizing a photo to 1000 pixels is just the right size for the photo to be uploaded onto photobucket. Then when it appears on the message board the photo isn't too big.

Hope I haven't made this seem confusing.
Good luck.

I was delighted to see in the first section a photo of BB Captain Jack Budge. Jack is still going strong in Bayview Nursing Home Thurso - he's well into his nineties now.

Some great photos in from Mr Bews... many thanks.
I remember your father well - and a lovely man he was too.
Mr Caldwell of Wick Junior Choir fame is among them and many other faces I remember.

How many of the young Boys Brigade are still around and looking into caithness.org I wonder?

Great pictures.

It's my father that's MR Bews ;)
I'm still just ee meenester's son!

He and Mum are still on the go and met up with a number of Wickers a couple of weeks ago at the sad occasion of Margaret Youngson's (Budge) funeral.

Nothing more recent, but here he is a couple of years ago:

I am posting the following on behalf of Trinkie. LB

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e322/maggie1947/OldSoldier.jpg

I love this old photo, taken by Johnston just outside the Studio in Market Place.
An old Soldier walking from Edinburgh to Land's End via Wick, with all his belongings in his cart.
This picture reminds me of the Old Soldier William Wordsworth writes about in The Prelude - as a young boy he too met such a man. Wm Wordsworth plucks up courage to speak to this old fellow. The soldier responds to his greeting -

"Slowly from his resting place
He rose, and with a lean and wasted arm
In measured gesture lifted to his head,
Returned my salutation."

On their return from War, many soldiers found themselves homeless and unable to settle, so they packed a few things and started to walk, living in the open, sleeping under the hedgerows and eating what they could find ! I wonder if this old fellow ever made it to Land's End.
The name of the side of his cart is R.Carlisle

Betty and Thirsoloon - both have submitted a picture of the Fountain foundations by the river, with 'Meredith Hotel' in the background.
That is now MacKay's Hotel, and at the corner of the street facing us is Ebenezer Street, recently said to be the shortest street in the country !
I suppose no more than 40 inches appx.

There will be a link to it here on caithness.org

Lavenderblue2 - I'm going to take a wild guess at this - so please correct me if I'm wrong.
I wondered about that building too, then found this snippet.....

"In the Market Place were the Stocks. Almost in front of it, close to the Cross of Wick, stood the town pump - a square stone erection - the centre of interest on special days when bonfires were lit. On the weekly Market Day, mutton was hung around it for sale, and thither buyers and sellers foregathered. The prisoners were said to play pranks on the worthy people assembling round the pump, by throwing out, through the prison window, strings with hooks attached which said hooks gripped the hats and wigs and sometimes the mutton, of the douce gentlemen attending the Market.."
by John Horne.

Could this be it? What do you think? I dont know when the picture was taken or when the square building was taken down.
I hope someone will enlighten us.

Trinkie

PS another wild thought - I think the prison was near the Tolbooth at that time. ..... Isn't that Tolbooth Lane running up from what is now Woolworths ?

Thank you very much Thirsaloon, that really boosted the Wick photo section, now I hope some others will send in their favourites !

The last coloured photo you submitted - looking down Bridge Street, really tells a story seeing so many folk walking there. Nowadays with people in cars you seldom see them out walking in such numbers. At that time there would have been more 'Good Mornings' and raising of hats !

I love this old photo too - there's something quite haunting about it. The youth of the children, in contrast to the age of the old soldier, the slight haze in the background. So sad that many soldiers found themselves in this situation after the Great War! Yet there's still a look of undefeated determination in the aged soldier's eye. I'm sure he had many a tale to tell!

The shorter handle below his left hand appears to say "2,000 miles" - the length of his proposed journey, I assume. I hope he made it as well, God bless him!

What happened to the francis street church?

I assume you mean the "West Church", which was on Francis Street between Dempster Street and Moray Street.

I know in my father's time (he was minister of the Central and West churches from about 1950 to 1967) the Central Church was used for the morning service, and the West Church for the evening service.

And the BB Bible Class was held in the West Church hall on Sunday mornings (at 10.15am). Sunday School in the Central at 11am, then Central Church at noon! Then possibly a service in a country hall. Then evening service in the West. Guess how often I go to church now?

I have seldom been back in Wick, but remember the shock at seeing the site of the West Church having been converted to a petrol station.

I think the last time I visited was with my parents for the dedication of the pipe organ in Pulteneytown Church, after the organ was moved from the Central Church following its sale to the Baptist Church.

These moves are typical of what is happening throughout Scotland, with the decline in church attendance.

The manse in Thurso Road where we stayed was actually the West Church manse, the Central manse having been sold and converted into the Queens hotel.

What happened to the francis street church?

Im not sure exactly when the West Church was pulled down but I know it was in the past 40 years. My bedroom in the house that I was brought up in, had the church's old floor lining the gable wall. My dad was always a bit of a recycler even back then and he was working on the site at the time it was pulled down and reclaimed the wood from the floor.

And I am sure the 3 B/W photos I found last week will be of a BB camp in the early 1950s. Very small photos, presumably contact prints from film from an old box camera.

I hope that Ackergill counts in this thread because here is an old faded photo of the Ackergill Lifeboat Crew in the early 1900's - probably most of these folk are my relations - as far as I know, mainly Thain's and Flett's.

From 1894 - 1913 the lifeboat coxwain was David Thain who was my g.g.uncle (hope I have the g's right).

Prior to that from March 1878 - June 1894 the coxwain was my g.grandfather William Thain - he is pictured in the second photo along with his wife Elizabeth and eight of his family - I believe the only one missing from the photo is my grandmother Margaret.

It would be great if anybody can help more with the names of the lifeboat men.

That's a great photo – thank you for putting it on.

It was hard work indeed, but you know the more I think about it the more I am convinced it was a lot better than working in Mills and Factories as most folk who went to cities had to do.
The horrendous machinery must have been terrifying for folk who had come from the country.
Think of the noise, danger and smells and air pollution ! That to me, is far worse than working in the open air with smelly fish.... or working in Service with all that that entailed for young women.

The parents of the women in your photo likely came to Pultney from the 'sooth' – from places like Latheron and Sarclet and would have been well used to hard work in the fields in all weathers.
As the children grew up, working in the Fishing industry would give them a steady wage. It was an exciting time – a new way of life with a regular income, and better housing.

When I first looked at your picture I immediately thought it was a Yard in Lower Poltney.... But I really am not sure. The Yards in Poltney were Taylor's in Barrogill Street (where my grannie worked ) Skinner's Yard in Murchison Street and Stewarts and Bremner's Yard in Nicolson Street. Down round the Harbour there were Davidsons, More's and Calder's Yards. If my memory serves me correctly.

The folk who came from the 'sooth' all lived nearby in Royal Street ( now Vansittart Street) or Wellington street. At the top of Royal Street was Coasters' Square – named for the people who came from the coast.

I have a copy of a Scottish Fisherwife – a Gutter, beautifully painted by Sylvia Pankhurst who made a study of Women at Work during the Suffragette Movement . The painting was done when the Scottish Fisher Lassies were down in England – likely in Yarmouth or Lowestoft..... if you'd like a copy please PM me.

Southview7... Someone pointed out to me in the small Post Card the lettering on the barrels - is that a C or G ?
If C then that must be Calder's Yard. The skyline is right - looking over to the north side.

Shabbychick - I love your picture of Wick Harbour, though it is not a Wick skyline ! Artistic licence perhaps ?

This has all been very interesting.

Coincidentally I spent today wandering around Wick with my cousins who left with their parents to go to Bathgate fifty odd years ago........and among other things, they were talking about the boats on the river and the Trinkie.

They were also a bit peeved with the council that they hadn't taken better care of the building they were born in........and thought it ironic that it is the Planning and Building Services who occupy it now. Lol!

Love all the old pics of Wick, being an "oldie" I found it quite nostalgic.
Imagine my surprise when I saw my Mum's photo in the Herring Quines picture of south view 7s. I am sure it was Sinclairs Yard of Lower Poultney(used to be near the saw mill and beside the old boat yard) to the right of the Service bridge if my old memory serves me right. :D I was just so pleased to see her.

I'm enjoying the old photos too - many thanks to all.

I was curious about the Camping one at first glance, but now I think I've got it..... I see the Station Hotel to the left, then the steeple of Bridge street Church....... But I didn't think there was enough ground on the river side of the path for campling, and yet.....
On the left side of the path was there a little fountain or green iron Well, something with a handle. ( I remember we used to play with it as we crossed the path )

I'm also puzzled about the Dolphin Restaurant. I remember a Dolphin Cafe in the High Street, opposite Charlie Begg's shoe shop and up from Cabrelli's.
It was a single fronted shop. That would be in late 40s / 50s

Hello Lavender Blue,
the building in the Market Square was erected by ex-provost Paterson Smith( same man who paid for the fountain) to provide a shelter for the fish wives of the day.It had a seat and a counter, this was in the first decade of the 20th Century.I think it was demolished in the late 1930s.

the original Dolphin was in High Street where Harrolds Butchers is today. The building was demolished in the 60s and the TSBbuilt a new bank on the site

trinkie
30-Dec-07, 19:32
Thank you Mosser,

I think the original Dolphin was next to the Liverpool Victoria Offices. To the left there was a little lane going down toward the river.
Maybe there was only the door and one window. Inside it was a longish room with lots of tables. Perhaps run by two sisters ?
It was a big treat to have High Tea there - I remember my father having Poached egg on Toast ! I used to love the three-tiered cake stand with all the fancy cakes ! And of course bread and butter came free with your tea !

Across the road was Dan Dunnett's Shoe shop - and what service, he always addressed us as Miss .....(he knew all our names) that really made one feel important and very good for business too! Old Mr Dunnett always wore his specs on top of his head and was usually clutching a box of shoes under his oxter !

I love this thread but unfortunately have nothing to add to it in the way of photos. I do, however, remember the later Dolphin Restaurant in Bridge Street (late 60's?) run by two lovely ladies. I do believe they were sisters and stayed in Mowat Lane, Wick. The chocolate cake was to die for.......

Dan Dunnett's son & grandson kept up the good old fashioned service until the day the shop closed. Graham Dunnett (our previous Lord Lieutenant in Caithness), dressed to impress, complete with bow-tie.... Such memories .....

Good to remember Moira !

I remember a son Graham Dunnett who was in the shop too.
I went in one year whilst up on holiday - He showed me some Barker shoes but lamented the fact that they were no long using leather on the soles but a horrid amalgam of modern stuff ! He was so vexed and apologetic about it, I think he took it personally !

Great service and sadly missed.

Hi Highland Laddie

Your photos are fantastic. I can still see the ones you posted tonight, but the five you posted late last night, after your initial problems, are no longer viewable. Is there a problem with your photobucket?

These are just too good to miss so I hope you can sort out the problem of uploading them here. :)

What wonderful pictures. I think Torvaig is right about Bill Mowat, Lybster and Draper shop in Wick. His wife was Aileen Mowat who started the Wick Arion Choir. A daughter I think an actress ?

Many thanks,

I wonder if this was anything to do with the Stirkoke rifle club as the man with the bonnet behind Bill Mowat looks awfully like my uncle - Willie Steven. Does anybody think that the man in the middle front with the dark jacket may look a bit like George Dunnet? Maybe this man is his father.

I love these photos.

Oh my goodness! The man on the second left is my handsome uncle - John Steven of Puldagon. The man third from left I believe is Willie Swanson Pennyland Farm Watten (either that or he's sixth from the left), fifth left I am sure is Bobby Brown (Jessie Brown Pennyland's husband) and I am nearly sure that the man second from right is my second cousin John Steven (Borgie Hotel)

Highland Laddie, these photos are great, thank you so much for posting them.

I am sure that the fellow on the left of the second row down is David Innes Achairn, Stirkoke and the fellow on the other end of that row could be Don Sutherland Blacksmith. The girl third from the left in the third row down could be Margaret Simpson Haster.
Another lovely photo.

I really liked all the photos ,and the memories they brought back.
Were things al that wonderful back then?
Us boys were always on the go. Boating on the river ,fishing at the harbour and all round the rocks, especially Longberry.
I feel that the Town Council of Wick was remiss in many respectsbut two that I feel Strongly about, namely, the loss of othe boats on the river and also when they put the Morning Star on the Bonfire. She lay on the wee slip at the end of the Service Bridge and I understand she was one of Wicks original open lifeboats. A sad end to many things which brought a lot of fun and happiness to many folks over the years.I would not have missed these times for any other

Well done LavB2.... So many names, that is amazing.

I wonder, could the woman with specs, standing in the back row - top left, near the door... could that be Isobel MacGhan ( laundry MacGhans) she used to go to all the Occasions to play the piano - she could make the old Joanna Ring like nobody else in Caithness ! We danced all the Country Dances to Isobel's playing .... then sang all the songs whilst she played on !

Torvaig and Moira - what do you think ?

Yes, well done LB. Could it be a WRI Social where different institutes got together and put on some entertainment for each other. The lady on the back row, far left could be The Lady Harmsworth who would sing at such occasions; maybe not..... and could the bus driver be Sandy Spence?
