What games did you play as a bairn?? Do you remember any skipping song's??

I was discussing this with someone the other day and could only remember 1 of the songs we used to sing while skipping.

Cinderella dressed in yella
went upstairs to kiss her fella
how many kisses did she get....
1 2 3 4 ect

We remembered some games - kiss cuddle and torture, man hunt, kirby, fish and chip shops (with stones and mud), whats the time mister wolf, and hop scotch.

We girls used to do a skipping game with actions . It went like this:

Mr MacKenzie's a very fine man (both legs skip)
He teaches his children as best he can. (both legs skip)
When he does he does a dance (alternating single leg skip)
Out of England  (skip out)
Into France (skip back in)
Out of France (out)
Into Spain (in)
All around the world and back again (twirl round while skipping)

This was quite hard so if you made a mistake you were out (usually me first).

Also British Bull Dog, kiss chase (could be quite alarming!), donkey (ball game).

Spent quite a lot of time hanging upside down from a climbing frame whilst trying to hold dress up to hide knickers... and seeing how many steps you could take on stilts before falling off[lol] .

Oh now my memory isn't good enough to remember all the games we played except fopr the obvious ones

Mother May I
Simon Says
Hide n Seek
Levo
British and Gerries
Cowboys n Indians
Doctors and Nurses (used to play that one with the girls, it was a kind of exploratory game and very educational too)
British Bulldogs
Kerby
Heady Football

One game I used to like was when we used a football and had a whole bunch of people and gave each person the name of a football team while the person with the ball stod with his eyes closed, then he woudl kick the ball straight up i the air and shout out a team name, the person with that team had to run cathc the ball and then throw it at someone to knock them out or something, its been a long time.

Also did anyone else play Battering Rams, it was a guy thing, used to play it in Miller Academy, a very strange game where 4 boys carried one like he was a coffin with his feet straight out and then would ram another group to see if we could get them to the ground.

Ha ha my mum taught me that when I was a bairn and I used to buy PK chewing gum too [lol] When she taught me though it was just Panny Packet not Penny a Packet.

Donkey and Aldy Baldy were ball games.

If I remember rightly Donkey was played with a football and you threw it to each other and if you dropped it for the first time then everyone shouted Donkey, the second time they shouted Ass and the third time they shouted Fool and I think you were out then.

Aldy Baldy was played with a small ball which you threw against a wall but sadly I can't remember how it was played.
I think there was a rhyme which went with it?

It was a game where the 'leader' stood at a wall and the rest lined up quite some distance away and the leader would shout out different names (which all had different actions) and the winner was the person who got to the wall first.
Can't remember them all but there was 'Kettle' which meant you had to spit and land on where you had spat! Charming! lol
The 'Cushion' where you had to bend down put your hands behind your knees and jump as far as you could. I think if 'Squashed Tomato' was shouted you had to go back to the beginning.

Afraid the old grey cells are going and I can only remember parts of the games.

I forgot about Hopscotch and also skipping games. All great fun!

Do bairns play these games in Caithness now?

I was on an outing with some school children this morning and we had to wait half an hour for our coach.
To keep some of them occupied I began to play '' One potato, two potato et '' and to my surprise they had never heard of it.
We played happily for ages, even the more lively ones joined in with screams of laughter !

Some great games mentioned on this thread..... keep it going.

ha ha, i mind squashed tomato, i think you could shout "lampost" and this would mean you would lie down and you would then go to stand at the furthest bit you could stretch out to.
levo was a magic game, and kick the can, and also mind some playin elastics, tho i wisny into that.

We used to play a daft game called heads down thumbs up in the classroom sometimes. I can't remember the point of it though. Think you put your head on the desk, and your hands in fists with your thumbs up. Then someone who was "it" came round and pushed your thumbs down and you had to guess who it was. Or something. Or maybe there was no point to it at all....

No one is teaching them, pure and simple. These days all they know is how to 'hang out' and 'socialise' - ie loiter in groups and moan about how bored they are. None of them dare lose face and admit they would like to play something. Many of my tutor group have been earning merit badges. Know what they do with them? Pin them on the inside of their jackets so that they don't appear to be 'boffs'. I think it is a great shame and condemnable that children are ashamed of doing well and striving to be better. :~(

We used to play this in miller Acadamey, it was used to kill the last five minutes of the day and it was to keep the kids peaceful when they were getting excited about the bell going, usually 4 people were brought to the front and they then went out and tweaked your thumb, then you had to guess which one tweaked your thumb, then thebell went and nobody cared and we all ran home.

Yeah I remember them, remember Wally too, one of my favorite games. I remember having huge games of wally where we each had a team like Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen etc, you woudl blast the ball at the wall and shout a team, if the next person couldn't return the ball after one bounce you were out. Also played World Cup singles, doubles etc in one goalmouth.

Ah I just remembered another one

Dead Man's Fall

anyone remember that [lol]

Played squashed tomatoes and didn't know that's what it was called until I read Liz's post. Rounders, cricket, skipping, hopscotch, farmer's in the dell, spin the bottle, and jumping over the neighbours stooks. I was just skipping, playing hopscotch, dodgeball and rounders this past weekend and they're still a lot of fun. I used to love the races we played at school picnics -- sack race, three legged race, egg and spoon, etc.

Red Rover cross over
Spotlight ( played in dark with a torch, object was to hide and then return to "base" without getting caught in the torch beam)
London Bridge
Skipping
Elastics
Clapping games (can't remember how they went though)
Catch & Kiss
Chasies
Handball
On the monkey bars, I wasn't too worried about my dress I don't think, I was such a tom boy. :confused

Oh and hopscotch and spin the bottle
Truth or Dare, that was a scary one. We were forever racing up to poor innocent boys and slapping a kiss on them.
