You would think that if he only needed to get up to 5000 feet to confirm that the earth was flat, he would have saved a lot of money, and probably his life, by just booking a ticket on a local regional air carrier, then looking out the window.

He should have taken a trip to Las Vegas. I did a 15,000ft tandem jump with about ten minutes of instruction and it cost less than $200, a lot cheaper and safer than a steam powered rocket.

At that height, did the earth look flat or globular?

A tragic story. There is a web site called "Darwin Awards":

https://darwinawards.com/

I wonder if the story will go on there.

Wikipedia entry with history etc:

It must be posthumously quite galling for him to realise that his actions have made him famous all over the globe.....

If he were still alive he may flatly disagree. Some squares have no sense of humour.

You have to take into account the fact that he was from America, a country known for most of it inhabitants being a bit deficient when it comes to brain size

Three die in dry-ice incident at Moscow pool party
I guess it shows the intelligence of an "Instagram Influencer" when she arranges to have 25 kg of solid carbon dioxide into a pool into which her friends climb into.....

Unfortunately, she won't qualify for a Darwin award, having failed to terminate her lineage.

He ironically seems to have flattened himself on the round Earth!
