well considering that there are just over 2100 members on the entire forum, i think either the forum has lost more than half it's members or it's just a random number generated by the forum itself.

crawl bots. If the forum is supported by google analytics then google will send crawl bots in order to keep the info they use to make the .org searchable up to date. Bots will register as anonymous users on some basic counters.
