Recently moved to Ackergill and our bill (on storage heaters in the house), has been huge. Been wondering about converting to either gas/oil. Anyone got experience /advice of this locally or can recommend a good source of local expertise. Thanks in advance.

There are many web sites with advice about this problem.

Mains gas is probably he best if you are on the line and if you can get the company to connect you. There have been problems in the past getting connected even if you have it near you due to capacity issues on the net work but this may not be the case now.

Here is one web site with some good advice https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/heating-costs-gas-vs-oil-vs-electric-storage-heaters.html

But I suggest you contact Pentland Energy to get a free visit for advice. They are a community project and have lot to offer in this area. Check out their web site at http://www.pentlandenergy.co.uk/

Storage heaters are generally really expensive to run and you'll not get mains gas where you are. I'd go for oil - controllable, not too expensive and low maintenance.

Having moved from oil to calor gas I would suggest if you are planning to move from electric then oil is possibly the cheapest solution. You may find the article https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/heating-costs-gas-vs-oil-vs-electric-storage-heaters.html useful - although they say gas is cheapest this is based on mains supply not if you have your own gas tank. Also the website http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland is useful.
