Highland Council Statement - Car parking in Lochaber
Commenting on the decision made by the Lochaber Area Committee at its meeting on 7th November,2018 to introduce two hours free car parking in the six weeks running up to Christmas for Fort William, Cllr Allister Mackinnon Budget Leader said: "We are aware of the decision made by the Lochaber Area Committee to offer 2 hours free car parking in the run up to Christmas, however legal advice is that the decision has budgetary consequences and therefore it needs to be considered by the Highland Council when it next meets on 13th December 2018." Cllr Margaret Davidson, Leader of the Council added: "In addition a time table for the background work required to enable the consultations on the roll out of further car parking charges will be considered at Area Committees in the near future." Highland council have been considering a much wider roll out of car parking charges across the region as their budget gets squeezed more and more by increased cost on one hand and not enough funding from Scottish Government. In common with other local authorities Highland council has been considering what to charge for to reduce the need to cut even more services.
