Top job for record belly dancer (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/highlands_and_islands/6719913.stm)

Congratulations Liz!

Has anyone else tried belly dancing? It's not as easy as it looks and it doesn't always lead to a top job in local politics. I should know!

Now, now Crayola, naughty, naughty. By starting a thread about Belly Dancing you are risking somebody claiming you are being sexist again.

No doubt somebody will try to insist that males should also be Belly Dancers in the interests of equality! ;)

Are you making a point or just trying to stir the pot?

I don't see how this could possibly be sexist?

I was eating at a Moroccan restaurant and was pulled up by one of the dancers to try it - my hips do not work that way.

There is no way she can be a belly dancer; she hasn't got a belly!:confused Now me......

When we were in Turkey there was a fantastic belly dancer, best we'd seen, I was wondering why the men were a bit reluctant to put paper money down the top and bottom of the costume (as was the usual habit) when my hubbie pointed out to me that it was actually a male belly dancer!

They have classes here too, and I certainly do have the belly for it....but almost certainly not the confidence.

Maybe I'll just go for a hula hoop, in the privacy of my own home...I hear they are making a comeback...;)

Yes, I used to dance with a group down in Northampton before we moved up here. I still have all my costumes and all! :) I rather miss it, as it is great exercise, and a lot of fun, so if anyone was to start a group up here, I'd be an enthusiastic joiner-in!

And for a bit of info...traditionally/historically, belly dancing was a male activity. Its really only been since the early-ish 20th C or so in Western cultures that it got changed to female presentation (influence of Hollywood...dancing girls, Zigfield Follies...and the "exotic" nature of the dance picked up for burlesque shows, etc, and then strip shows, until eventually the dance form as a genre became viewed as slightly risqué. Luckily, in the past 10 years or so, opinion has rightfully changed). If you ever get to see a "true" display presented by male dancers, it is absolutely breathtaking. Like a lot of traditional dances, the point seems to be a representation of fighting strength, speed, and agility, and they often use swords and fighting sticks..singly, in pairs, or in groups. Its brilliant stuff!

But congratulations to Liz. The dancing and the World Record sound to me like really favourable commentaries about the lady. :)

Just to add...the revealing costumes that most people associate with Arabic dance are also a more modern invention. The Egyptian, Middle Eastern, and north African traditional versions are extremely beautiful, and reveal only the feet, hands and head...or eyes, if you choose to wear a headdress and veil...no bare midriffs! So anyone who might be put off from trying the dance by the idea their shape is less than perfect, really should have no worries. I danced for about 4 years and never showed off my middle!

I teach bellydancing sometimes and regularly go to classes. Here is a shot of our group nervously getting ready to perform at Newcastle Civic Theatre. I am the tallest dark haired one!!!:confused

I too choose not to show my middle. We tell people that it is exotic dance, not erotic.http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u71/Lolabelle_2007/IMG_0234.jpg
