HEALTH bosses were yesterday accused of being underhand" and "a bit sneaky" about the future of the inpatient ward at Dunbar Hospital in Thurso. Local health campaigner, Liz Smith, spoke out, after it emerged the only patient in the ward is being discharged this week. Miss Smith is concerned about the long-term implications for the beds at the Dunbar as is Bill Fernie who chairs Caithness Health Action Team.
BICYCLES without pedals may sound about as useful as a square wheel but balance bikes are exactly that and are helping tots develop skills and confidence. Andy McDonald, founder of Deeside's Balance Bikers Junior Cycling School came up to Caithness, recently, to help coach children from Lybster, Dunbeath and Keiss nurseries. Balance bikes look just like regular bicycles but without pedals.
AN agency worker was paid almost £40,000 more, for six months than a Highland Council employee was paid for an entire year, an investigation into temporary staff has revealed. Opposition leader Maxine Smith was "shocked and worried" when she discovered that 447 staff currently employed by the local authority, on a temporary basis, are paid more than £100 per day.
A ROW has broken out over how to improve education in Scotland after proposals were blasted by Highland councillors for taking power away from local authorities. Plans include handing significant powers to head teachers, giving them more control over staff, budget and raising attainment which sparked fury over who will monitor schools' performances, amid claims that control is being centralised to the Scottish Government.
A FORMER police inspector will be at the forefront of talks between Highland Council and the emergency services after being appointed to a new role. Thurso and north-west councillor, Matthew Reiss, who previously served as the far north area commander with Northern Constabulary, has been appointed the strategic lead for police and fire, amid safety fears as a result of centralisation.
VENUES in the far north are included in a new passport scheme which has been introduced on the popular North Caost 500 route. The five in Caithness are the Castle of Mey, Dunnet Bay Distillers, Wick Heritage Centre, Camster Cairns and Caithness Horizons in Thurso.
THE office at the Stagecoach bus depot in Thurso has been closed to the public. But the company stressed the move has not led to any job losses with all bus travel enquiries now handled via its website ticket agents and Traveline Scotland.
