Suspected drinks driver was on way to service police breath machine

A SUSPECTED drinks driver wasn't allowed to provide police with a breath sample to the usual electronic machine...as he was the engineer who had been stopped on his way north to service it!
Instead, Ayrshire man, Richard Grant, 54, gave a urine sample which showed he had been over the limit, Wick Sheriff Court was told today. It revealed a urine-alcohol level of 92 milligrams - that limit is 67mgs.
Grant's connection with the customary process, emerged, after he was pulled over at Berriedale by police,on April 13, 2015. Constable Scot Lemon told the court that the accused was stopped after he was observed veering over the centre line at bends on the A9.
Constable Lemon said that after consultation with the duty sergeant and procurator fiscal at Wick, it was decided, that, due to the unusual circumstances - the accused was due to calibrate the intoximeter - he would be asked to provide a urine sample instead of a breath specimen
The officer added that Grant, of 2 Steeples View, Troon, was "not happy about it" but complied with the alternative procedure. He has pleaded not guilty.
The trial will resume on August 15.
