After the launch of the Flag of Caithness last year, it seems that the neighbours are jealous (as well they might be). A competition is to be lunched for a county flag for Sutherland, according to the Northern Times (http://www.northern-times.co.uk/News/Sutherland-set-to-have-its-own-flag-07042017.htm).

Good luck to them.

I hope it doesn't portray an English Galleon like the Caithness flag. It should've been a longship.

Any design will be better than the Caithness flag.

Am trying to figure out what the saying on the bottom of your post means?

Well, they've chosen a winner for our neighbour: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-43009286

(The Flag Institute have picked up on it, and it looks better in the better resolution on their site: https://www.flaginstitute.org/wp/flags/sutherland/

I see in the Scottie some very negative comments, but I have to say it looks stunning. It is very different from the run of most flags - striking and with local resonance.

Now for Ross-shire...

It's one that's been commandeered by Vikings.

I think it's a heraldic device for a Scots Birlinn.

Hopefully it won't look as crap as the Caithness flag.

I doubt anything could look as bad as our dark dismal rag of a flag!

The new Sutherland flag competition has a winner:
https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/highlands/1632871/controversay-over-initial-choice-for-the-sutherland-flag/

There's a new East Lothian County Flag (https://www.eastlothiancourier.com/news/17298691.more-than-1500-vote-cast-in-competition-to-choose-a-flag-for-east-Lothian) too as of yesterday.

So, will Ross-shire have a competition? Or Cromartyshire?
