Praise for County's cup heroes - from John O'Groat Journal website - www.johnogroat-journal.co.uk

ROSS County's Caithness contingent played their part in lifting the SFL Under-17 League Cup at the weekend.

The club's youth coach Peter Budge, who lives in Wick, praised his team's performance after they scored a last-minute goal in injury time to defeat Airdrie 1-0 in the final at New Douglas Park, Hamilton, on Sunday.

Thurso teenager Scott Begg captained the side which included Scott Mackay Steven and David Allan, also from Thurso, and Lybster youngster Stevie Cunningham. The Caithness contingent left the county at 8am before lifting the trophy 11 hours later after Elgin teenager Martin Charlesfort netted the only goal of the game in injury time.

A delighted Budge said: "It is just like lifting the Scottish Cup.

"The League Cup involves clubs the length and breadth of Scotland, so this is a magnificent achievement for the club.

"It was a tremendous game - the players put in a great performance and in the end we came away with the result.

"The local lads did well. We are very much an attacking and passing side. We got in behind them and controlled most of the game and we knew the goal would come."

Budge believes the side's victory in the SFL Under-17 League Cup bodes well for the future of football in Caithness and the Highlands generally.

He pointed to the success of the Caithness contingent in various age levels at the Dingwall club and said they should serve as an example to other youngsters in the Far North who wish to follow in their footsteps.

"This is a fantastic club where the players receive enormous support and the set-up is there to encourage other youngsters to follow, " he added.

The Ross County U17s, who are preparing for the final game of their league campaign against Arbroath with the aim of securing runners-up spot, will be told what the future holds for them today with a number of the squad expected to be offered full-time contracts with the club.
