A CAITHNESS councillor yesterday called for the break-up of Highland Council before the next local authority elections in May. Thurso representative Donnie Mackay and his Landward Caithness colleague, Willie Mackay, backed calls from Inverness and Nairn councillors for changes to local government.

ANOTHER Caithness link to one of Scotland's most notorious killers, has been recalled by a Wick man. Alex Paterson who lives in the town's Seaforth Avenue said his brother, journalist James Henderson, covered the Peter Manuel murders when he worked for the Daily Express in Glasgow.

THE axing of bus services between Gills Bay and Inverness has been described as "a very serious loss". Bill Mowat, a local community councillor and chairman of Gills Bay Ltd, criticised the changes and said it could make it impossible for people to attend hospital appointments.

COUNCILLORS have been told they cannot afford "a wishlist of vanity projects" including a velodrome and new swimming pools because so many new schools need to be built. They were asked to review a report on the local authority's capital budget including new projects which have yet to be agreed, but were warned many are unlikely to materialise.

SPIRIT of Caithness has awarded a charity tackling loneliness in the county, nearly £30,000, to help expand its reach. Befriending Caithness has been given £29,000 to develop its work to include people aged between 40 and 60.

CAITHNESS artists are being given the chance to spend the day painting in the grounds of the Castle of Mey, next summer. The venture is part of a fundraising drive led by Joy Jackson who is appealing for anyone interested in taking part in the event, to get in touch.

FOUR straight wins laced with 20 goals have given Academy the perfect pre-Christmas platform to go on to secure a top four or five place in the Highland League. Saturday's 5-1 whipping of Huntly at Christie Park combined with teams round about them dropping points, has put the Scorries in sixth place in the table, with assistant manager Richard Hughes happy with the recently progress made.
