DOUNREAY has been accused of "poor practice" over its disposal of lightly-contaminated nuclear debris - a claim strongly rejected by management. A whistle-blower who worked on a temporary contract at the site, claims material was being put into the low level waste dump which should not have gone there.
A BID to increase taxi fares in the Highlands is being opposed in Caithness as it would be "counter-productive" according to one local firm. Businesses in Inverness and Dingwall have requested increases which could see fares rise from between 10p and 60p a mile. That would bring prices into line with the UK average.
NEWLY-resigned Caithness Highland councillor Gail Ross has handed over £2,400 to five local bodies since July. But Mrs Ross has admitted she was so busy she had fallen behind with the donations and "will be contacting other charities in due course".
HIGHLAND COUNCIL has been warned it may have to eat into its emergency reserves to balance its books despite the fund already being at a dangerously low level. The budget team had hoped to start building up reserves which are at a historic low of just £10.5 million but have now been told they will have to choose between spending the remaining savings or making even more cuts to services.
THE rules on the number of firefighters needed to attend an incident should be reviewed in rural areas and more flexibility is needed in outlying part of the Highlands, according to landward Caithness Highland councillor Matthew Reiss. He has hit out at existing arrangements which stipulate that five firefighters have to be present before an engine can leave the depot.
A GROUP fighting the proposed Golticlay wind farm at Rumster forest, has highlighted its concern about the development and is calling on people to come together and object. Rumster anti-Windfarm wants as many people to object as possible, before the December 9 deadline so that a public inquiry might be held into the plans.
WICK ACADEMY have every incentive to win their re-arranged Scottish Cup tie against Stirling Albion, tomorrow. A win for the Scorries would create history and see them in the fourth round of the tournament for the first time, resulting in a home tie against Clyde or Arbroath.
