HEALTH chiefs yesterday confirmed they will downgrade maternity services in the far north but protesters have vowed to keep up the fight. Members of the NHS Highland board unimously agreed to axe 24-hour cover at Caithness General Hospital in Wick. However, the Caithness public are calling for answers on how the proposed new-look maternity service will work and most importantly, will it be safe.

THE chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise has said he has been given reassurance that the organisation will remain in its current form. This comes after Deputy First Minister John Swinney said a single board will replace those in place for HIE and other enterprise boards in Scotland.

A SECTION of the X99 bus route between Caithness and Inverness, due to be axed, could now be saved with Stagecoach looking at laying on a link service through Halkirk. The bus operator intends to revert to the original itinerary for its Caithness to Inverness runs which involves buses starting and finishing at Thuro and passing through Castletown, Wick and Dunbeath.
