YOUTH clubs in Thurso and Wick have pleaded with Highland Council not to go ahead with proposed cuts to their funding which they claim could have a disastrous impact on young people in Caithness. Representatives from the club have written a joint letter asking the local authority not to scrap all funding to both organisations in two years' time.

A WICK Academy superfan is looking for his fellow supporters to join him in a march from one of the country's most famous landmarks to the stadium where he hopes his team will make their own history. Alan Oakton plans to hold aloft the Caithness flag and parade it from the grounds of Stirling Castle, all the way to the Forthbank Stadium where Wick Academy will take on Stirling Albion next Saturday in an event he is calling the Barmy Army March.

THE future of the twin town link between Wick and Klaksvik looks bleak after the Faroese town has failed to respond to pleas from a Caithness councillor to hold talks.

HIGHLAND education chiefs have warned against a league table system of reviewing primary schools performance. Next month the Scottish Government will publicise new data on every primary school in the country indicating how well children are performing in reading writing and numeracy.

FAR NORTH MSP Gail Ross officially switched on the exterior lighting when she dropped in to check on progress at Wicks new archive centre. The £20 million Nucleus Building is being created by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to store records kept at Dounreay and Britain's 16 other defunct civil nuclear sites and to serve as the new home for the Caithness Archives.

A NAMING contest for the youngest calf of a pod of orca known to visit the Caithness coastline, is soon to return a result. The pod has caused great excitement among the worlds' researchers, conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts after being spotted off West Iceland last week.

A THURSO distillery is raising a glass to success as Wolflburn whisky has won a top award in its first competition.
