Where street lights are available yes I agree. However who in their right mind decided that the the school uniform hereabouts should be black, and what are the parents thinking? There are rural areas where there is no street lighting and drivers should be aware that there might well be black ninja pupils making their way home in the dark.

had they went for a dayglow uniform they would be rather expensive as no other school does so.
Perhaps an orange boilersuit would have done.

There is nothing to stop parents giving their kids a high viz jacket or waistcoat to wear over their blazer for the school commute is there?

Buy them a torch, the world is using too much power as it is.

Live in the towns and cities if you want street light not in rural areas. They put in street lights in Scarfskerry a few years ago, what a waste of money no one steps outside after dark only to get in their cars and drive.

Not as much as street lights and you can get solar and windup torches.

Windup torches are out, they still require energy & chances are that energy will have been produced from the consumption of meat so Rheghead won't be happy about that...

Will 7 hours of daylight in overcast December skies provide enough charge for 17 hours of lighting?

Well say your kid has it fully charged on sunday night,it would need to have sufficient charge t olast unti lfriday nights walk home to be worthwhile as they will have it in their bag all day during schooltime

already thought of that one - the schools would be on board and have a 'charging' windowsill for all the torches ;)

They don't know they're born nowadays.

for the kids to pinch each others torches?

most kids manage to go to school every day and come home with the same jacket, wouldn't be that hard

maybe the school could employ a Torch Negotiation Officer to make sure things don't get out of hand

yeah but you haven't considered the poor underprivileged kids who cannot afford a torch, or the ones who's father flogs the torch down the pub for a cigarette
