BANNERS, placards and old bed sheets hung from railings at one of Thurso's best known landmarks, have been branded disrepectful and war veterans are aiming to put a stop to the practice. Members of Thurso Royal British Legion Scotland have blasted companies, individuals and organisations for displaying adverts and messages near the war memorial at Sir Johns Square.

MORE beds at community hospitals could be transferred into transition units to help cope with the growing number of people in Caithness waiting for a place in a care home. NHS Highland have revealed 29 people at present, are waiting for a care home place in the county with 18 of those being stuck in hospital as there is nowhere else for them to go, due to care homes being at full capacity.
A PLAN to make 90 percent of the Pentland Firth a special protected area for seabirds could put fishing and tidal energy jobs at risk. that is the concern of Dunnet and Canisbay Community Council which claims the proposal could have an adverse impact on existing and future employment.

A CAITHNESS gym owner and 70 of his members, are over the moon to have raised more than £8000 for three local charities by completing a giant obstacle course. Kris Hamilton, a fitness instructor who runs Hamilton Optimum Training and his team completed the 10-kilometre Beast Race, recently, along the banks of Loch Ness in a bid to raise as much money as possible to be split between the Laurandy Day Centre, Dunbeath Day care Centre and Home Start Caithness.

THE future of Highlands and Islands Enterprise could be a risk from plans to give control over development agencies to a new national body. That is the fear of north MSPs Rhoda Grant and David Stewart who are worried the proposal will undermine the role of HIE.

SCOTTISH rural econcomy minister, Fergus Ewing, is to be contacted about the uncertainty over the future of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Highland Council decided this week to write Mr Ewing following government plans to create a new national board for enterprise agencies.

WICK ACADEMY'S blank weekend was a bonus for the club as it allowed a clutch of injured players to make a full recovery. Steven Anderson, Gary Manson and Sam Mackay who had all been suffering from niggling complaints, have all been declared fully fit ahead of tomorrow's Highland League encounter at Rothes.
